Hey Team,

We've got new forums for the project, which have been pushed to forums.crowdedgames.com

If you're on the team, please register there and drop me a line so I can add you to the pond hockey dev group, which will grant you access to the game dev forums.

Programmers will still need to have an account here to access the subversion repository for now.

Cheers!

How does the rest of the team think of these ideas? Part of me thinks this could be a really great idea, while the other half of me thinks it may be a bit overboard on wackiness. What say you all?

PS: 14 players, 6 goalies is our aim for the initial release. We are planning on releasing downloadable content in the future which expands the character selections with each content pack.

here are 25 character ideas but only 20 character(14players and 6 goalies) can be put in the game, we need to pick the ones that stand out or the ones you would like to see in the game.

here is what you do, pick 14 for the players, and pick 6 goalies, you can post your picks here, or you can email me(bpringle753@hotmail.com) your picks, i will keep track of which ones you pick and after a couple of days i will post which ones will be in the game.

if you got a myspace account you can see which character your friends would like to play out of the list, just give them the list and they can email me.

Who am I?

Brandon Hess, known as "Hereticprophecy" and "Relin" on various gaming forums across the internets.

What is my background?

I've been an avid gamer for around 15 years now, across various platforms (my first was a Tandy Color Computer...you do the math). While I enjoy PC gaming when I can afford it, I'm primarily into consoles (PS3 is my platform of choice, but the 360 is next up for a purchase). I've been programming for around 3 or 4 years, mostly in C++ and Python, and have recently entered web programming. On top of that, I've been learning some networking/database management for my other project, an MORPG.

What qualifications do I have?

Nothing official. I'm a computer science major (recently switched from aerospace engineering) so while programming is my focus, I have loads to catch up on. I have a handful of arcade clones under my belt (Pong, Tetris, Pac-man, Asteroids, and Gauntlet) and enough unfinished team projects to cry myself to sleep. I've done engine work for most, but recently have gotten experience with directing and creative design.

The forums for Jenn's game Ninja Frog inspired me to create a thread for my own games for people to meet others who are on the team, so here goes:

Who am I? Phil MacNevin

What is my Background? Another Jack of All Traits (or what I call a JoAT. Tell people you're a JoAT and you get some pretty funny looks). I am also a tech lover. I have a broad range of experience from graphics to a small dosage of programming to video production to business management. I've been in the 'entertainment' industry (so to speak) since 1997, working behind a camera, infront of a camera, editing, directing projects, motion graphics, web design, game design, photography, 3D modeling / animation, music production etc.

What qualifications do I have? Officially? That would have to be a diploma in Business Management. Otherwise, most of my qualifications comes from work experience coupled with a driving passion to create quality entertainment. I also have finished individual courses in specific software and skills. I am also a certified Personal Trainer and Snowboard Instructor, but other than the ability to manage people, those certifications don't really have much to do with the project...

I know folks are setting up the programming behind the interface and have it generally set up. Would it be possible to get a list of commands for each menu and the hud posted here?

I have some ideas for organizing the menus, but they're pretty basic right now because I'm not sure what needs to go in. If someone is already working on the interface, I'd like to help anyway I can.

Here are some basic screen ideas I had. It's mostly for organization. The colors and font are fully changeable.

Well, rhy1993, I guess there's a reason why I'm a programmer and not a designer of UIs/etc Happy. I had never even thought to do the UI like that. I had been having trouble trying to visualise how to place the characters and now I can see how to achieve that a lot better, thanks a bunch.

Anyway, I have been pretty dead on the project due to being half-dead with corsework/etc. Now that the coursework is over I only need to do revision so I can probably spend about 3 hours a day on weekdays to get this done. Probably 6 or something like that over the weekends. I have re-designed the design for the code as the original one was not thought-through for even two minutes. I was too excited to get this underway Happy. So now I'm writing up a design for this which should make the coding fairly fster than before. I also like the TorqueX stuff there, Phil, it's a realy nice tool to visualise concepts with.

We may need to switch gears on this for a little bit, seems that doing it all in XNA is taking a long time. So for now there is a new pipeline:

1) Build in Torque Game Builder (which I've already started doing)

2) Port code into XNA

3) Play on the 360 Happy

I've already begun building the rink arena and have pretty much finished the first rink (which we can use as a template to build other arenas on, just swap out the background image for a new one of the same dimensions and we've got ourselves a new rink).

Pond Hockey, Rink #1

I've also imported a makeshift character to use for now until our actual characters are animation and imported into the game.

I've also built a puck, but physics need to be applied to it. I've also built the hockey nets complete with rudimentary collisions (no passing through the net, as well as proper layer sorting so that when you're behind the net, it looks like you are behind the net).

There is still a lot that needs to be done, but it's starting to shape up!

That's my priority right now.

Right now, I need more people working on concept art, and a 3D modeler to start building some of the characters.

I also need somebody to build out a hockey net with dynamic netting that will react to te puck being shot into it. I guess we'll also need the puck physics and net physics to be worked out.

Physics is always fun Happy. I'm working on getting the puck going in the right direction depending on where the character is. I haven't done anything quite like this, I never thought I'd get stuck on the seemingly simplest of things Tongue, I guess a quaternion will work, though.

Gots some really good tweaks on the Cell Shader, it's coming along really nicely, thanks to Stuart.

We've now got a bit of a deadline, aiming to pitch a prototype to Microsoft at some point between the end of April and mid May, so we've got to get cracking.

This is basically what we need to have complete by then:

1 Goalie Character / Model

3 Player Characters / Models (Skinny, Average, Chubby)

1 Net Object / Model

1 Puck Object / Model

1 Pond Arena, with background art

Pond Hockey name finalized, Logo completed

Placeholder music and sound effects

Score HUD

Timer HUD

Period HUD

Menus:

Start Game Menu -> Pond Hockey -> Character Selection

-> Free-For-All Mode - > Character Selection

Game progression should go from Start Menu -> Game Selection Mode -> Character Selection Screen -> Game Play -> Score HUD screen -> End Screen / Development info

Everything doesn't have to be absolutely perfect and completely polished. It should be solid though, with solid gameplay and solid (but not finalized) artwork. The goal of this prototype is to A) get a framework in which to build off of, and B) sell the idea to Microsoft to get us in the Xbox Live Arcade pipeline. Let's get to it people!

A quick update on what I'll be doing for the time being until we start to get the project underway fully.

1. I'll be trying (not promising anything Tongue) to get the DOF shader done.

2. I'll also be creating a framework for the engine of the game which will include networking, storage, graphics, input, audio (implement after the 1.1 update) and that's about the basics that I'll be doing.

Storage is coming along nicely, btw.

So far as the (as I'm dubbing it) Interesting Cel-Shaded Engine (ICE) engine goes, it is going well. I have a new Cel-Shader that needs some tweaks, a Storage and Networking side that are also coming along nicely. However, I won't be able to do a lot with networking right now as I'm still learning it for .NET, but I am picking it up easily and I have done WinSock before so there shouldn't be too many surprises Happy. I guess I'll do the shaders until we can get a shader guru on board, but just to show you what I think looks like an awesome DOF effect, here's an image taken from RenderMonkey's DOF effect:

Depth of Field from RenderMonkey - Picture 1

Depth of Field from RenderMonkey - Picture 2

It probably won't be as straight-forward as the Cel-Shader to implement, but I'm hoping that it's doable (I can make up words, too).

I'll be setting up a blog and video podcast for both this and the Battle Axe Island Game, but for now we can use this thread to keep the team updated on what's happening on the game front.

Today teh_programerer (Stuart) and I are going through a build of the Cell-Shader. Can't wait to take a look at it, Stuart has put a lot of work into this. I'll give an update once I've had time to test it out.

Also, Jenn is working on some concept art for the game, maybe we'll have something to post soon. I've also had interest from Mephistoau on my Battle Axe Island team on joining our crew here and possibly doing some concept art for the game as well. He's a really talented artist as well. Pringle may be involved in the concept area as well, we'll see what he comes up with.

That's all for now, and those of you working on the project, be sure to post your progress here, and I'll make sure it all gets seen in the podcast.

Thanks for the input. It'll be nice to have full support. Yeah I've tried testing connectivity through WMP11, but no luck. I've tried disconnecting the firewall and no luck there either. Odd thing is, Vista full recognizes the 360 and all the option are set up to share with it... also, when I tried to connect through Media Connect, the PC is able to communicate to the 360 and tell it to initialize connection, but then Vista bunks out, saying it can't configure the extender. Odd, but I'll keep at it....

Have you tried to generate a connection key, that sometimes helps Happy jk.

Anyway, I'd assume you could use WMP11 to test if the connection is there, I'm sure you go to the Drop-down arrow on "Library" select "Media Sharing..." and allow the 360 to connect, the on the 360, try and stream some .mp3 files or something like that. Also, I'm getting Vista soon-ish (wihtin the next week or so) because my mother upgrade her PC and decided to get Vista with it. I even get it to work w/ the RC1 of Vista so I have no idea why it wouldn't work. One other thing I can think of is if you have a hub instead of a router, then it would only allow one device (preferable the 360) to connect to XBOX Live and check if you have a valid subscription to the CC. Anyway, that's all I can think of right now. In the next minor release there is full Vista support as well as a feature to test the connection between the PC & 360 for XNA GSE.

Hey there, I was wondering if we will be able to pull this together in the next 50 days. I ask as I have very little physics/AI experience and am hoping that some other programmers on our team could ge back to me on the other thread soon so we can talk more about the project. I am learning physics and some AI in between sleep, the project and college work. I'm wondering if it will be done so at least 5 days beforehand so we can squash any possible bugs. I have the main menus done and am inplemeting the animation system using the "Skinning Sample" as a base from the XNA Creators' Club site.

Thanks for reading.

I ask of the programmers because if we have to get this done for Mid-May at the latest, then we should really collaborate now. I have just been creating the menu system for the past day and am almost finished with it.

Maybe I'll ask Stuart to post screenshots of the cel-shader and you can make comments to it, let him know what it needs and he'll work on creating the right effect. I'll try to see what can be done Phil. About the cel shader, one thing to remember is to avoid the 3D soft feel. In animation we call it soft edges. That's when there's a blurry gradient feel around the colours The problem with that is that it makes stuff feel like 3D instead of flat animation. And flat animation next to 3D doesn't look very good.

Ditto for the environment. Better to have it all 3D or all flat. It's better to have a stark transition between colours and shape, like in Animae, rather than a softy edge. The goal of a good cel shader, is to appear like real 2D, not remind people that's its flattened 3D.

I'll try to get some screen caps to put up here as well. Oh, and Herve, would you have any spare time in that busy schedule of yours to whip up a couple of concepts for playable characters? We're pitching Microsoft by end of April, mid-May, and we need a few characters to put into our prototype (skinny character, average build character, and a heavy-set character). Let me know if this is possible for the next week or so! Thanks!

I don't see many games on the XBLA being Cel-Shaded and as I absolutely loved how the effect was achieved in JS(G)R and JS(G)R:F especially. I think that the effect would suit the game and could be implemented fairly easily. So I guess I'm a "Let's do it!" guy, too.

5 years, 2 months ago

Sorry for the lack of detail, but it is very much to your imagination. The only thing I have in mind is that I love the Disney-inspired look, which I know you're great at! Same goes with environments.

Once I have some concept submissions, I'll decide which style of characters I like and go from there. For the characters themselves, it is wide open to what the actual characters themselves can be. In my mind, I picture kids playing hockey, and they can wear anything from snowboarding jackets and scarfs, to worn out old hockey jerseys, brand new gloves or worn out mittens, anything is open as long as they seem wacky and cartoony.

There can be adult and teenage characters as well. The key thing for the characters will be size, which affects the gameplay. There are 3 types of characters: Thin / Skinny, Average build, and Larger characters (chubby or muscular, or creatively, you could have a character wearing a ton of padding or lots of layers of clothing that could put them into this category).

How the game will work is that you can choose any of the characters to play as, and depending on what team you are on, the color theme of that character will change to match the team (essentially, each character will have 2 skins, each depicting what team they are on, with the potential to have up to 4 skins with the additions of new game modes).
