Hey can we get some sort of update on this? I just found what looked like an "official site" of sorts for the game - which basically had none of the characters seen in any of the development? What's going on?

No it has not died, sorry I didn't update on this sooner, I was updated via MJ over MSN instead since they no longer use this forum or anything.

Three members of the old team moved over to HotHead Games in Vancouver, and the rest of them no longer work at CH. However, a bunch of team members were added over at HotHead Games. So basically, these forums are dead, but the game is still alive and doing great. Estimated beta release is in January.

I've been thinking about this the past few days and I feel this would be the best direction to take gwabs:

A little while ago, I made a suggestion that it would be cool if different icons did different things when used. Well, now, I actually think this theory is part of a great way to ensure gwabs is an addictive, successful game when released.

I know characters/character themes/weapons are currently planned as a form of microtransaction. However, for characters, when there are only 7 or so characters, that doesn't offer a whole lot of opportunity for microtransactions and doesn't give a huge variety to the player, as characters are costly investments and so are limited for not so much return.

So that leaves weapons. These are a pretty good candidate for microtransactions because they can be used by all characters. 1 new weapon is like 1-6 or so new attacks for every single character, without a lot more work.

Now, if I remember your Jolt video right, you were planning on making items too, at least back then. But with all of these fighting games out, what sets gwabs apart from them the most, and is the main reason people are interested in it? It's the fact they can use their desktop to obliterate their opponent, obviously. The dynamic environment and combat with the desktop environment theme is endless and unique, and is something the players will love.

So, I think we should exploit regular desktop items as much as possible. The more this is a "desktop" fighting game, the better. So I think we should use different desktop icons as different kinds of useable/throwable items, and these can be microtransactions. Like weapons, every new item/icon is an opportunity to make a new attack for every single character while using the simple grab/throw animations and only a new particle effect animation.

This way, you can give the players a huge variety of items as well as weapons to buy without a huge punch to the wallet.

I think hardcoding trademarked names and logos into the game is illegal, so popular non-commercial icons/extensions would have to be the main icons used. And it can't be look specific, only extension specific as different files look different on other computers.

Example:

.txt files: Text Grenades -- Explodes sending text characters in all directions as grenade shrapnel.

.png files: Alpha Transparency -- Makes character invisible to the opponent for a short time.

.zip files: Zip Trap -- Traps the opponent in the zip file for a short time until they struggle out or are smashed out by their opponent.

.rtf files: Rich Text Grenades -- Sure it's the same as the .txt, but it could cost a little more, do a little more damage, with the only difference in appearance being different font text coming out.

Folders: File containers -- Character can shake and dump a new file from that folder if there is no longer any files on the desktop. Just one random file in the folder though so it isn't too hard on processing.

.exe files: Execution Program -- To "execute" the opponent. Hee hee.

Recycling Bin: Your personal trash can -- Pull out the dead bodies of previously defeated opponents and chuck them at the opponent.

.bmp files: Pixel Potions -- When used, the character regains health.

There are tons of possibilities. Each player could unlock what extension effects they want through microtransactions, and put as many as they want of whatever on their desktop.

Possible way to get sponserships as well:

Hardcoding a commercial, trademarked icon without permission is probably illegal, however, I bet software companies would pay good money to have one of their icons have a special effect that can only be unlocked by downloading and installing that software and putting their icon on their desktop for the game.

I mean, it would make people actually want to download and install the sponser's software. Links on the gwabs site could be given out to show what different software icons do what, and since the company is paying for it, it can be provided free of charge to the players. This is also a way to still get compensated from players that prefer to play completely for free, for whatever reason they have.

I think that's tons better than what was planned for Jolt. Players won't even think of it as advertisements.

Gwablet Hat Gwablet

So, what do you think?

Hey Cory,

We are on it, we have recently chatted with a few big ad firms about it and they are very interested to start presenting the icon ad options to their clients. As for not being able to charge for characters, after launch new characters will be introduced to the game often so they will still be included in the store, along with weapons, power-up's, Special effects packs and much more!

Hi guys. The story Cory mentions above as already been discussed and is currently being enabled in Gwabs. Not exactly as Cory mentioned above, but close enough to be in the same vein. In particular, we've discussed the Winzip idea several times.

So, I'm glad to see that through crowd think, good ideas are coming up in several instances. So we're already on our way to try monetize icons as much as possible.

Have to make sure to keep the control scheme simple, though, because like Jen was talking about, it can be a pain when controls are in strange places. I think Space Bar makes a good pick-up/throw/misc. action key. Try to use as few keys as possible and but them in easily reachable places from the main keys. Like with console games, most commands are combinations of the same main buttons. Instead of your current throw/set down object combination, make it so space bar is drop if they are holding still, and throw if they are pressing a directional key as well.

We were all chatting the other day, and Spazbot came up with a pretty cool idea of how to bind a few of the characters moves to the keyboard. What if you had to use key commands - say ctrl + alt + del to perform some kind of finishing move, perhaps ctrl + z could 'undo' some damage on your character.

What do you guys think? Any other cool key combinations you can think of?

KICK ASS!!

These Characters look so much cooler!! Way more personality, stronger anatomy, and a darker yet appealing Style, The variety in the designs will attract a larger user base meaning more sales. Great Job on the brain storming and changes everyone. It is great to see the evolution of the characters. This is my favorite part of concept art. I so love the teddy animations he is hilarious and being a female gamer this character would be my first choice J then Vampire Girl and Silas.

This game is looking awesome. Keep up the hard work team!!

Silas, Tito, Rygarr, Bentley...done but what about the others?

> Here are the results from the last community vote...

Waaaay too long. Even player defined names in games are usually limited to around 15-20 characters absolute max, generally because long names can't fit in the GUI, and ellipsis or overlap would be tacky, especially considering it's a hard-coded name.

> Purple Cow - Mavis

Well, I don't know if you're saying Mavis is finalized, but I like Halgar or Boris, maybe.

> Shark - Tanker - Does that fit his new look?

Not as much anymore.

> And what about this hot new vampire like chick?

Looks good.... Definitely be awesome when she sprouts wings.

The shaded look is fantastic, though now a few of the characters contrast the shaded ones a bit, especially the Teddy and Silas, though the teddy can pull it off, at least for his cuddly cute side.

some taunt ideas:

Teddy:

-rips his chest open and shows his beating patchwork heart while screaming and shaking his head

-has wolverine style metal claws spring from his paws

-smiles, hugs himself and wiggles cutely

-five seconds of Teddy Bear Picnic in the background

Goblin:

-stops to polish his $ medallion

-smiles nodding his head and showing his shiny grill

-a breakdancing stop pose

Shark:

-could open his diving helmet and spit out a diver's flipper or a pair of swim trunks.

Cow:

- grabs udders and sprays milk at an opponent

Just make them look arrogant like they're really trying to piss off the opponent and the same is accomplished, just without cheesy speech that doesn't fit well.

My taunt idea possibilities:

Silas: Pulls out a big carrot and twirls it around like a cane. Or maybe breaks it over his knee. Or both.

Tito: I'm not sure what the personality type of this character is supposed to be. Is he like a Mexican wrestler? If so, maybe some flexing and boisterous dancing like a wrestler?

Rygarr: Depends; is he a demon or an alien or what? I assume he's a demon, in which case he could do something with fire, like breathe it up in the air dramatically. Rygarr isn't a comical character (which is important to have at least one of), so it should be something to show that he's angry or that he thinks he's feared.

Teddy: Mephistoau's idea fits this one perfectly, I think.

Cow: The suck the utters thing is pretty funny, just as long as she doesn't talk. She could beat on the utters and look at them as if to say "you want some of this?".

Goblin: Can't think of any.... All that comes to mind is "think rap pop culture...."

Bently: Bently's taunt needs to look a bit insecure and humorous like he couldn't look threatening if he tried. What he does, I don't know Happy

Shark: A kind of break dance, maybe?

mu ha ha, sometimes it pays to be sick and twisted

Well, the game can be sick, twisted, and funny, but it doesn't need to be dirty. If they make the humor too crude or immature, it's going to lose a large chunk of it's audience and respect from critics. It should be clever twisted humor, not grossly overdone crude/dirty humor. You don't see many people over 10 raving about fart jokes (though they can be good on rare occasions Tongue)

Silas: Turns around, bends over eats a carrot and each time he takes a bite he poos a little and grins

Tito: Who is Tito?

Rygarr: No idea

Bently: *Sings* "If you come out of the woods today..." Then extends claws out of his hands and growls

Teddy: Violently rips stuffing out of body, grins evilly then blows it at the opponent like a kiss

Cow: - im liking the "suck this" idea

Shark: Jaws dun dun music plays, then the shark lets out a mock scream, gnashes his teeth and chuckles

Goblin: No idea

If i come up with any more ideas ill post again Happy

What do you think that the character taunts should be in the game?

Some examples we thought of today were:

Cow - Says "suck it" and (beats on it's udders like a drum)

Sharky - Random bubbling noises (flaying fins)

To re-fresh your memories...here are the other characters

Silas, Tito, Rygarr, Bently, Teddy (needs a name), Cow (needs a name), Shark (needs a name), Goblin (needs a name).

I thought the idea was for the game to be dark and scary, not cute and cuddly... can we reach a consensus on that and stick to a theme maybe?

OK Mel,

You wanted some taunts...here's a few:

Silas: I'm close to Cory_Ross' idea with a twist...Pulls out

a carrot from a "front" pouch...extends the carrot to the opponent

and says "bite Me"

Mavis: Take on the udder theme swings at opponent or jabs and says: "4 in one blow" to opponent,

Or, "Think you can handle me?"

Blue Ice: wiggles fingers in the manner of Neo in Matrix addressing

Mr. Smith and says: "Bling On"

Teddy says to opponent: "So you think you're some kinda fuzz plucker?"

Gnasher: Pulls out a brush, brushes teeth and says to opponent:

"The last one was tasty" gnashes teeth and smiles.

Happy

So, I've been thinking... You know how the pros get around 360 mil? Well maybe what they do is they get a times 10 multiplier and then open up a wormhole by shooting it and then they let it fill up with enemies but just before it bursts they shoot it some more, but not enough to kill it, just enough to let it fill up again. This way they can get tons of points in one kill. Kevdog? What do you think? Is this the answer to the mysteries of gwars?

PS. I got to 1.4 mil without dying.

One kickass thing I have yet to mention was that Danger won the Flatout tourny at the S3 booth. Itchy and I were in the race so helped Dange out a bit by doing some blocking/taking out Wink It was a blast! Danger won the Flatout game as well as an S3 video card.

Then the next day there was a raffle off at S3 for a new computer and some cool new 3D mice. I was lucky and won a 3D mouse Happy

That's all for now.

Hey team!

Some of the in house team were lucky enough to attend the GDC last week. It was amazing in all aspects. We saw some kickass new tech ideas, engine demos, games ideas and concepts and much much more. Everyone who got the chance to hear about Cambrianhouse and Gwabs were thrilled at the idea and some even interested in joining our team Happy There is way too info to post here so I'm going to keep an eye on this topic and answer any and all questions you guys have.
