The Idea

An online community for MBA students worldwide, a one stop resource for people considering an MBA, or in a program. Not looking to replicate a facebook or myspace, want to keep it more exclusive, and have valuable content. At a basic level, would have forums, searchable database of teh different schools, summary information on the schools and their programs, comments from students about likes/dislikes for the various MBA programs. As well I would like to partner with companies who could offer the students discounts, and thru the ad revenue is where the site would make money. For example, partner with Dell for student discounts on laptops, since in my experience about half the students purchased a laptop in the first quarter.
Next level of the idea would be to partner with the schools and make the site a resource where teachers can create virtual meeting spots, post assignments, etc. There are other sites like this (blackboard.com) and in my experience they were very basic and difficult for students/teachers to navigate.

I thought of this idea when I was...

When I first was applying to the U of WA Evening MBA program, I went online to learn as much as I could about various schools, what the MBA experience was truly like, etc. There was no solid resource that I could use to find all the information I needed. In the past, any hobby or activity I wanted to engage in but knew nothing about, I found valuable 1-stop sites where I could get an understanding, and tap into the local site pros with other questions.

Thanks Natmaka,

Yeah I found a few sites like that... that's about the best one unfortunately. So yes, it's been done, but I'd want to do something with better content, interface, etc. Not looking to make a fortune off it, just somewhere for MBA's to meet up.

And a SkypeCast, good idea. Skype is da bombbbbb

Well I don't think you needs a team of developers for this as (like Vanhees points out) there's lots of existing tools to leverage. But I would investigate hosting your own social network site. There's open source platforms like Drupal you can extend.

Really whichever path you take is dependent on how much control you need, and how much time you have. But you don't need to be a coder to set up your very own social networking site, you'd probably just need tech skills to get it started.
