The Idea

Hello, my idea is to develop a software which will help warehousing companies connecting to the classical express Carrier (Fedex, UPS, TNT & DHL) by producing a shipping Label and exchanging information with the carriers. Currently, there is no existing market solution between the online web solution offered by every carrier (like Worldship for UPS) which is convenient for low volume and the full customized solution develop by each individual warehouse. The protocol for producing a label (barcode 1D, 2D, EAN13, etc..) and exchanging information with Carrier is always the same (EDI, XML, etc..) for every carrier. The potential market is huge as each individual warehouse all around the world potentially needs such software. We can imagine to have a market solution based on Specifications provided by every carriers which is already existing (ex PLD200 for UPS, I have a copy of it). I can provide with a lot of functionnal background and even engage the discussion with the carriers.

I thought of this idea when I was...

When I was program manager in charge of the outbound implementation of a huge supply chain project, which is started with the go-live of a 25,000m2 warehouse. I was amazed by the fact that our Logistics Warehouse partner (DHL) was not able to easily "plug and play" the warehouse with every carriers (UPS, TNT, even own DHL carrier!!, etc..) even if they did this thousand of times exactly the same way before. DHL was forced to develop their own basic solution especially for this warehouse and this is the case all the time !!!. In fact, this solution is not so complex and the Carrier specifications are extremely well documented. Nobody took the time to develop such software. This missing link within the supply chain software is clearly missing currently and not not so complex to develop as it seems. I can provide a lot of functionnal background.

I was, once upon a time, a manager for a Fedex distribution center/warehouse - and I definately see a need for a unified system. Getting each of the couriers to conform to a standardized waybill system isn't too likely so a software solution (as you propose) seems to be the only way to play ball.

As much as I'd like to suggest a micro-payment format for this (1 cent per package scanned, for example) most warehousing equipment is older or would have issues communicating it's product counts with a central server. I think per-site licensing is the way to go, probably with a yearly fee attached (for maintenance, updates, service support, etc.).

I can also help with any sort of in-depth or technical needs.
