The Idea

Update! At the suggestion of Alx, I have added the ability for users to upload greeting cards they have created themselves!! Woohoo! Create away!

Crap-e-cards.com

A greeting card site that allows you to convey your innermost frustrations. A greeting card site that provides you with the "carthartic" opportunity to speak your mind and vent your frustrations in a semi-civil, non-violent way. Some greeting card examples could be:
- Let's Break Up!
- Your Dog Bit Me!
- You Sold Me a Crummy Product!
- You're Not As Cool As You Think!
- Thanks for the Ticket!
- You Suck!
- Quit Stalking Me! I'm just not interested!
- Thanks for Stabbing Me In the Back!
The list is endless!
An sample of my idea can be found here:
Crap-e-cards.com
I created the site with Sendcard, but it needs a lot of help!

I thought of this idea when I was...

With all the greeting card companies, I thought this was a great idea to convey thoughts and feelings that the other greeting card companies could never do.

I personally think this is brilliant. And a Facebook app based on this would be soooo cool!!! I need more cards created first, though. :-)

TG, I think this is hilarious! I've seen a few websites that make real crads like this, but it'd be fantastic to have an online version. It is just so funny!

Its been done...not saying you couldn't do it again, but I found this site in about 4 seconds of Google-searching:

TravellingGuy Posted: August 1, 2007, 1:03 pm

Hey ThrasherC. Me and a friend came up with idea years and years ago, but it certainly doesn't surprise me that there are other sites like this. What's makes mine different is I got the best URL. :-)

bliss Posted: August 1, 2007, 1:56 pm

I'm not sure whether to look at it negatively or positively. On the one hand, it doesn't do anything to facilitate positive communication, but on the other hand, it is clever and entertaining. How about a site that has both nasty and nice cards?

zona Posted: August 1, 2007, 3:23 pm

I love this!!!! you need a bit of the work on the "design" side of the site but the idea is stupidly good. And the site name is awesome - so what if it's been done - it definitely can be done better!!!

TravellingGuy
TravellingGuy Posted: August 1, 2007, 4:32 pm

Hi Bliss.

Thanks for the comments. There are a bazillion other sites that offer "nice" or positive greeting cards already, including the big names like Blue Mountain and Hallmark, etc., so it'd be a tough go.

TravellingGuy Posted: August 1, 2007, 4:32 pm

Hey Zona.

Thanks for the positive words!

TravellingGuy
TravellingGuy Posted: August 2, 2007, 9:45 am

Hi Rizal. Revenue can come from two sources, advertisements on the website and/or, at some point, start charging to send cards. Of course, the website would have to establish itself before one could start charging...as there are alternatives. :-)

Kairaspo: Just cus it's been done, doesn't mean it can't be done better. My advantage is, I got the best website URL. :-)

zenanthor
zenanthor Posted: August 2, 2007, 11:49 pm

Think this can be done again. With heavy advertising and improved services. Think sending cards should be free, as i cant see many paying to send an e-card

hey thats a great idea!! ... i guess we dont have any such thing and it would work out!

DaveK

why not add a ugc component to get more designs, let people submit designs and then rate them like: http://www.splittheatom.com/ or http://www.threadless.com/

"My advantage is, I got the best website URL."

If that's your advantage, then I have to rate this idea low. I love the creativity in the URL, but I've seen it 5 times now and still can't remember the URL. Is it dashes or not. Is it a y or an e? Dangit. I'll just try google.

Christine
Christine Posted: August 3, 2007, 4:05 pm

I agree with techguy, the dashes in the url are hard to remember, but I still like the idea.

Hi DaveK.

I've setup Crap-e-Cards as a business on CH, and am looking for people to "donate" their time to help create cards. I can offer some RP's for any submissions.

It's a nice thought, but I think the idea needs a little bit more wit and class to work. Check out a friend's work, using the same idea:

I'm thinking something like Crap-e-Cards would be AWESOME as a Facebook app. :-) Imagine the fun and hilarity people could have.

JustMe Posted: August 30, 2007, 1:07 am

wow, a friend of mine and I came up with a whole bunch of "card that hallmark forgot" when we were in college back in the day...(one of my faves was "So you've been kicked in the nuts")...there is definitely a market for this kind of e-card.

scrollinondubs
scrollinondubs Posted: September 2, 2007, 2:42 pm

like it. How about making it like a "Threadless" for eCards though? Give people the ability to submit their own and rate other designs. I agree that you should stick to the funny/crass cards as there's a million sites already that do the feel good ones. Like the name but agree w/ Techguy that the dashes in a URL are difficult. This has the ability to spread very quickly like eVite and hotmail given the nature of what you're doing. good start.

Hi TravellingGuy,

Creative idea.

The only thing I can think of asking is, can you define your market?

TravellingGuy
TravellingGuy Posted: September 4, 2007, 2:47 pm

Hey scrollinondubs.

Alx gave a very similar suggestion to me in a PM. Indeed, this weekend, I did add the ability to upload your own e-cards to my site! The whole let the users rate them is a brill idea too, but obviously will require a fair bit more work implementing!

TravellingGuy
TravellingGuy Posted: September 4, 2007, 3:30 pm

(Sorry I'm late!) TOC Q&A ANSWERS:
Q. From scrollinondubs, who wanted to suggest that I allow people to upload their own e-cards and give the community the ability to rate them, kind of like Threadless.

A. Alx recently suggested the very same thing to me in a PM over the weekend. Excellent idea, and indeed, on the weekend I added the ability to upload your own greeting cards! The whole allowing users to rate the cards would require much more work, but it's definately something that I'll look at persuing.

Q. From Game, who wanted me to define my market.

A. My market is for anyone that has a beef with someone else. Young or old, male or female, adult or kid. If you got a problem with someone else, Crap-e-Cards has something for you!

Q. From Rizal, who wanted to know how Crap-e-Cards could make money.

A. Early on, Crap-e-Cards will have to make money from advertising. However, once we meet a critical mass, you could definately start charging to send cards or even charge a monthly fee like the big boys in the e-greeting card market do now.

Rich2809
Rich2809 Posted: November 9, 2007, 8:42 am

Most of the cards are crap anyway. Have you ever seen a good one or a cool one. NO!

Rich2809
Rich2809 Posted: November 9, 2007, 8:43 am

How about a service that prints the cards out and then just posts them via snail mail
