The Idea

Click fraud is the biggest threat to advertsisers and publishers of Pay Per Click advertising, such as Google"s AdWords. We can detect when an "unnatural" click on an ad has happened by analysing the user"s behaviour before and after the click. The factors which could be used to rate a click are - time elapsed before the click - mouse movements before the click - other clicks on the same page - whether the ad opens in a new window - other measures, which would not be publicised The base line for "normal" behaviour would be established by analysing the actions of users on pages that dont have ads, so we can work out typical behaviour for different countries and times of day. Any click which fails to pass this test would be rejected, with no charge made to the advertiser. The principle is to give the benefit of the doubt to the advertiser. Revenues need not suffer, because as advertisers gain confidence in the system, they will pay more for each click.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I was thinking about click fraud by bots, and wondered what could be done about human fraud.

Google certainly do it:

I'm sure other people do too.
