The Idea

A website where users input their favorite bands (possibly concerts), actors, software applications, authors, etc and then get an email notification when one of those things has a new release. An example is a user signs up for free release notifications for: any new book by Clive Cussler, any new CD by Gnarles Barkley, the DVD release of 'V for Vendetta', new patches for Battlefield 2 and the next game in the Call of Duty series for PC. ReNo keeps track of release dates (through purchased data or possibly amazon/imdb data) and will then send the user an email when ReNo finds a new book, CD, DVD, patch or game that matches the users release notifications. The main source of income is through the release notification emails that the user requests. They come complete with referral links to the specified product so the user can buy or pre-order it. Also, since users are basically telling ReNo what their favorite things are, ReNo can better target ads to them.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I often miss release dates of my favorite bands, games, movies, etc because I simply don"t have time to keep reading up on when things are coming out. Also, I set up notifications all the time on my work calendar, but I have to do the work upfront by searching for the release dates. ReNo would track release dates for me and would then email me when it gets close to the release. You could also create custom notifications and import/export data to calendar applications in order to take the notifications offline. I know there is release date databases/info out there, some is for purchase, and some you can access for free. For example, Amazon has a lot of release data information that can be accessed through web services. I think this tool would be possible, but there are a lot of details that would have to be worked out.
