The Elevator Pitch

For internet users who shop online the [product name] is a [product category] that [key benefit, compelling reason to buy]. Unlike what we have now our product they will be able to know if what they are buying has been stolen or is a lemon.

The Idea

The idea is to create a web service that would allow people to find out the history of an item that they own, just bought or want to buy. It would track history of an item by Serial number and allow owners of the item to update the status of this item.

It would have many benefits to the society:
1. Allow people to find previous owners of an item
2. Reunite people with their lost stuff
3. Build friendships around ownership of an item

I thought of this idea when I was...

I bought a camera from a friend and I was holding it and thinking to myself "I wander where this camera came from... hmm... how would I know?" That's where the idea came from.

It is a good idea...but...I would imagine it would be one of those sites that sit empty because it would be a very slight chance that of all the products out there, mine would be on the site. I would have a better chance getting the info from the person I bought it from then the chance it would be on the site.

I would look into RFID to help improve this idea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID
Anything that someone has to do that does not have a direct benefit to themselves is going to be hard to catch on...

They have this service for cars with carfax reports. The problem is that the lifetime for a lot of products is one or two owners, especially for electronics. Why would I buy a used device when I can buy a newer model that has longer battery life and more features for some where around the same price?

And if it is just being given to me for free, I am not one to look a gift horse in the mouth (though it would be nice to know if I am being given stolen property so I can avoid it)

what about the dollar bill site that tracks where bills pop-up in the world? Could be a similar idea for consumer products, assuming that:

A. Consumer products lasted longer than 6 months.
B. Consumers were interested in purchasing used electronics.
