A site which looks at stories that have made the frontpage of the various news aggregator sites by taking their frontpage feed. It assigns a point to each domain for each unique story that has made a front page and ranks the domains accordingly as a trusted source of news. Thereafter when a story from the same trusted site is submitted directly to this site then it can be fast tracked onto the front page of this site allowing breaking quality news to reach the front page faster and be more up to date than competitor sites. Searches can also be performed across all articles on the site and from the feeds from other sites and results returned by the numbers of votes that each has had - a popularity search across news aggregators.
Concept could be extended to rank and rate other items besides news. e.g. top jokes of the day as published on users websites. Eventually the plan would be for users to be able to self-publish their own data (e.g. new job postings) and rather than having to submit these to a certain sites, the ranking of the source site for that data would allow any info there to be spidered, ranked on trustworthiness and published. This would allow me to create my own XML feed for new data and for sites to pick it up and mash accordingly allowing better searches to be devised based on this data. The site trustworthiness could be the new PageRank. Initially makes money like digg via adsense but later when it is involved with self-publishing then there would be charges for having the products listed on busy sites like ebay and for additional services, such as campaign management and reports.
I can see how it'd be cool to have independent news aggregated with more established news feeds, and just pulling out the "trusted" material. But as much as I distrust FOX NEWS, DRUDGE REPORT, RUSH LIMBAUGH and ANN COULTER... voting on each news source is way less interactive than voting on each story. Even ANN COULTER forms a coherent sentence once in a while between the random syllables and spittle.
(Its still an interesting idea so I'm not dumping on it... I just am trying to imagine how interesting it might be to participate.)
Yup. Need more work.
It's an interesting idea... if you can come up with some sort of algorithm for converting people's votes into a useful trustworthiness scale, it could work. Unlike many ideas, it doesn't require a HUGE user base to function, so getting it started won't be too difficult.
This may have a small market.
