The Idea
What was so special about Rainman?
The limiting factor for most people when mentally manipulating numbers is the conception of the number itself. Without any training in numerical conception, we go our entire lives with whatever constructs we used to understand numbers as a toddler or young child.
When Rainman counted the toothpicks on the ground it seems impossible, but our brains are capable of recognizing highly complex patterns and our eyes are capable of conveying high resolution images. The question is not 'how did Rainman do it?', rather 'why can we not all do it?'
The limitation is in the conceptualization of the number and recognition of numerical patterns. Ongoing training in the recognition of numbers through different patterns using multimedia will definitely... def.. definitely develop mathematical and unforeseen skills, abilities, and talents.
