There are sites that match jobs with people like hotjobs.com and sites that suggest careers to people too. But none that really attempts to match you with your dream career AND give you feedback from folks who are actually doing it. So this new site would ask certain questions to figure out as best it could the kind of personality the person has, what is important in their lives at the time, individual vs team oriented jobs, good with their hands, detail oriented, etc. Then from a database of all careers would give weighted suggestions as to the type of career would suit them. The user can then click on a suggested job/career and find the necessary education or experience needed to get there. Suggestions on colleges nearby perhaps or distance learning colleges or courses or certifications and other helpful information would be given. Most importantly they would also be able to see feedback from people in that career to see what a typical day in that career is like.
a student trying to figure out what to do
I think the real trick here would be to motivate the people already working in the career to participate...
I once was given some advice from a wise man:
"Find something that you love doing, then find someone silly enough to pay to you to do it"
Then you have a dream job.
For your system to have any value, the person has to have a dream, and already have the desire to follow that dream.
I think the idea is brilliant as the last number I saw said that 75% of people HATE their jobs.
But I can't see how it can make money, or even cover the cost of keeping up the maintenance on the database or servers required to implement.
