Cambrianhouse has inspired me to become more professional and study a whole lot of new things, so now I am a lot more skilled and I think I may have landed a killer job at Electronic Arts, probably thanks to the mention of Gwabs

The Idea

A site and marketplace that allows users to procure and read e-books and documents online with the following features: 1. Save your settings + position in the book implicitly. Allow font / color / style changes for comfort. 2. Collaborative notes: users can leave notes >in the margin> about particular things, including references to other sources, notes about the content, etc. For example: online course-ware - where students and the professor can leave notes / Q & A about specific text. 3. Allow users to upload / update their own documents and books. Including PDFs, DOCs and sequential image files like CBZ or CBR. 4. Allow users to share particular content to other users. If DRM comes into play, then perhaps they can share only certain portions, or a certain amount of content. 5. Allow searching 6. Marketplace of free and purchasable e-titles. 7. Allow >private label> areas where companies can securely collaborate. and much more..

I thought of this idea when I was...

I love the convenience of e-books, and while I hate reading in front of my PC, the future of e-book devices is going to be connected to the Internet. If I could have one site with all of my e-documents, then access them from my PC, e-reader, iPod, phone, and even my Xbox, I"d be a happy camper. Keep track of my latest position so that I can open up my current book and start reading within seconds. Then on top of that, add in the community aspect. People will buy more books if their friends recommend them and share samples. Allow >borrowing> of books for a time period or for a smaller fee. Be reasonable about the DRM. (which should be less of an issue since the content is hosted) Do for books what Internet Radio did for music. This is a huge potential market and as devices get better and wireless Internet gets more pervasive, the market only gets larger.

I really like this idea. Im guessing as tablet laptops get better, reading e-books will be more enjoyable and acessible. All of your suggested features kick arse and I would definately leave notes for other readers, write down ideas as I have them, email suggestions to friends as I am reading. I spend a fair bit of time on public transport - this idea + tablet + wireless broadband = entertaining reading

Yeah, the biggest hitch (though I don't think its a death blow to the idea) is how to work with devices that are "off the grid". Perhaps that is a "premium" feature, to be able to download to devices, since that opens up a lot more of the DRM concerns. (Just like the URGE music service has two rates - one for at your pc only, and the other for mobile device use.)

Also, Microsoft just launched into the ebook realm this week with their new online ebook search. (like Google's) This can only help to popularize the idea of online reading. As more and more people get exposed to it, the market increases.
