Internet tabloid, written like a trashy celebrity mag but devoted to antics of everyday people. Published daily with a mixture of tongue-in-cheek articles (e.g., psychsplash caught eating burgers with his nanny) and serious profiles of the good work done by everyday people (e.g., JR works tirelessly at CH). Content submitted by public. Good chance for budding writers, photographers to do some work. Some interesting advertising opportunities: "AndyDoan - new face of Coca-Cola" "PsychSplash wears casio watches" Short-term limited to internet tabloid (RSS feeds, syndication) Medium- to long-term - look to get it in the newstands
flicking through a celebrity mag, I started thinking that the same tongue-in-cheek tabloid style magazine could be created for the average man/woman.
Wonder if woman's mags pull their content from a database. Like, how often has "10 tips for great sex" been spotted in a checkout asile?
Like that submissions can come from all over. Bet there ARE people who'd fire off an idea, like what they'd normally post to a blog, but they want to try direct it somewhere else.
I'm wondering...
- How we could generate advertising revenue by referencing our celebreties without micromanaging relationships with each advertiser? For example, "PsychSplash wears casio watches" would be very difficult to pitch to Casio because they'd want a full background on PsychSplash's history and asurances PsychSplash won't be busted for stealing a Timex in the future. The sort of micromanagement lavished on Cuba Gooding Jr by Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire (yeah that's all I know about sponsorship... what I saw in a Tom Cruise flick).
Any other thoughts on how we could pull in advertising revenue, or revenue in general? I like your suggestion 'cause tie-in is different, but that angle seems crazy difficult to me.

What where u thinkinking
Hey Gordon - you are probably right regarding the whole micromanagement thing. It frustrates me that everything comes back to legal issues. It isnt even possible to have a tongue-in-cheek advertisement nowadays
There are no limits re: advertising. The question is whether people will drop by to the site or get suburban celebrity in their RSS feeds. If so, then any kind of advertising can be delivered. The hope is that readers can somehow get involved with the advertising, be part of it and have their own 15 minutes of fame. This is possibly a pipe-dream but I dont care, pipe-dreams can be fun.
As to whether or not people would read "suburban celebrity", i think depends on whether they can get easily involved. If i can post an article simply and have a bit of laugh, I will read it. If i can redirect one of my blog posts to the magazine, that might be cool. Trashy mags are interesting because they are funny/controversial, but the same can be achieved with a different focus, the regular man and woman.
Arastoo: - i was thinking "why not"
Arastoo - you need to be more sensive :P
Wouldn't it just get SPAMMED to hell?
Like who moderates it and such?
How does the user get to read about the topics they care abotu or the people in their network?
lets not put up the content (no micro managing.) simply provide the interface to the gazzillions out there to put up relevant local content.
I look at this like the invention of blogs and ezines and the combination of these two - ONLY in the format of a TABLOID (that PsychSplash writes.)
Like Harvard (and ever school and college) has a official Magazine/ Tabloid/ Newsletter managed by students. This could be the perfect place for non-assigned students to run their own (unofficial) version of the college paper.
Cheers :)
good thinking fabulous. I have longed for a blog/ezine program that a person could populate with local or syndicated content. online software to create an ezine and distribute it is very good thinking.
