The computer industry changes at an ever increasing pace. Yet more and more people are buying computers and have access to the Internet, without enough knowledge to be effective buyers or users. This funds an often predatory service industry when what it should be about is helping people to get access to these information tools that will be essential in the coming years. Present a tutorial, Wiki style, that covers the basics - in plain language - of computers and the Internet so that everyone can have access to some basic knowledge. From how and what to buy to how to get the most out of it to the major issues of the day. Start with the question: "Why do you have (or want) a computer?" Provide a system configurator more comprehensive than the proprietary ones provided by manufacturers. Provide a community ranked list of the best freeware/open source tools for everything from communication to shopping to spyware blockers. Ranked lists of ISP options by location, etc.
One of my businesses provides neighborhood level computer support in an effort to help residents and small businesses keep their systems up-to-date, effective and safe.
