The Idea

I WAS HERE!

The concept is simple but meaningful (or can even be romantic!):

A world guest book. A mobile phone application which allows you to leave a message at virtually any corner in the world - depends on where you are currently located at!

It encourages users to shout to the whole world - "I WAS HERE!" by using the application to write down a simple note.

It works just like how lovers carved their names on a tree in a park they met or how backpack travellers painted their names and dates at a corner in a backpackers hostel.

You post a message dedicated to that location. Even years after the message was posted, the message will still be visible for other visitors or travellers who are standing at the same place.

Your instant feelings and thoughts are remembered and memorised. It can be simply "I WAS HERE!" or it can be your feelings or experiences at that location at that time.

I thought of this idea when I was...

One Possible Scenario:

You enjoyed a fun-filled day with your girlfriend. You chose a beautiful tree in a quiet park. You switched on the application under the tree, left a message and submitted. The system will remember this message forever with the location where the message was written.

In the future, visitors who visit the same corner (based on AGPS) will be able to see your messages. Most important, when you revisit the place, you will be able to see messages you left. Or even your children will be able to see how their parents met each other under that particular tree!

Income sources
============

Simple location based text ads

Possible Enhancements
================

1. Users votes up or down the messages (based on whether they are appropriate or meaningful enough?) This will make sure when you login the apps at a specific location only meaningful messages will be presented first.

2. Web interface to see all messages posted by you, with their locations depicted in a map.

3. Interface with photo gallery or camera Apps to submit the messages with a photo.

I think it's a neat idea, probably marketable. I wouldn't particularly care about seeing other people's graffiti in places I visited, but it would be nice to leave my own markers and be able to view my maps later. Kind of like the physical maps with pins and lines that some people use to record their travels.

There have been a lot of Flickr/Google Maps mashups lately. Has something like this not already been done? Not saying it has, and not saying you couldn't do it better. I've just seen a lot of action in this space.

DavidDubree
DavidDubree Posted: December 6, 2007, 9:06 am

On the web site you could have an actual photo of the place with the message overlayed in the tree, sidewalk, etc.. A virtual world. Yes! That's it....a second life mod to show your real world message. I don't do second life but maybe that mod could be done.

What about the ability to take a camera phone photo, add your text message, press a button and send it to the webserver, the server sees who it is from, the gps or cellgps location, posts it on the webserver along with the message.

You go to the website with your browser and wala, you see the it all in the proper geographic location. Memories forever for all to see (or keep it private).

as with many applications you have a large barrier to entry (getting people to buy it) You need a lot of people to have this program to make it work, and to get a lot of people to get it there needs to be content, but content comes from the people... how are you going to get past that ?

Also, you should consider a online side of things, you can rate resterants and other things which will apeare on the application.

"There have been a lot of Flickr/Google Maps mashups lately. Has something like this not already been done? Not saying it has, and not saying you couldn't do it better. I've just seen a lot of action in this space. "

Hi micco, indeed there are alot of actions in google maps mashups..initially I was thinkign about a location based rating mobile app but I think it will get replaced pretty fast and as mentioned by GodsLight it will requires alot of people to be involved to make the ratings meaningful.

However, for such a application, even if there are only 10 users in the whole world, they will still be able to leave meaningful messages in the locations that are meaningful to them..and check it out either by revisiting the place or through the web browser.

Magickaito
Magickaito Posted: December 12, 2007, 7:38 pm

GodsLight, I have actually roughly answered you above. Ratings services can be included into the application when it gets popular. But I would love to see people utilizing such an application to leave meaningful messages instead!

It is more like a "time-capsuled" messages system like this which allow us to leave long-lasting messages!

Magickaito
Magickaito Posted: December 12, 2007, 7:47 pm

"What about the ability to take a camera phone photo, add your text message, press a button and send it to the webserver, the server sees who it is from, the gps or cellgps location, posts it on the webserver along with the message."

Yes! exactly! photo is a necessary element for this proposed mobile application.

One key element of this idea is - long lasting. It is a time capsule. Unlike service finder, friends finder, the information will get outdated very fast. This idea try to jump out of this box and encourage long lasting yet meaningful messages which is time-proof. Every single messages in this system can be an "antique"...IMAGINE, they are also especially meaningful when the background of the picture that you have left has totally disappeared in the world. For example you were standing infront of a skycrapper, but switching on the application you can now see that this place was initially...a LAKE?

Yeah.

davidwei Posted: December 12, 2007, 9:29 pm

I don't get it. When you are in a given location you call a phone number on your cell phone to see who left short text messages for other people in that location?

Magickaito
Magickaito Posted: December 13, 2007, 1:58 am

Hi David, It would be a mobile application, it senses your AGPS, you types messages and submit. You also see a list of messages and pictures that are left at the same place (based on the AGPS). No phone dialing.

It's a cute idea Magickaito.
I'm a great believer in comparitive/familiar operation for technology - meaning if people are familiar with a physical world example of an online/tech product they are more likely to use and adopt it more readily.

So, as people have been carving initials in trees for centuries I think there would be a market for it.

I would however like to know a bit more about how you envisage the logistics - e.g. where/how are the messages stored/retrieved via AGPS, telcos assistance/acceptance, surely there would be a server/message/download fee for data who pays etc etc!

Kevin_Cox
Kevin_Cox Posted: December 17, 2007, 6:53 pm

I know for sure I have seen online map tagging equivalents. It was basically you click the place you are at on the map and see how many country's people were from.

I think this idea is good. But, what stops spam? Because for most guest books you have to physically be there.

Anyways, I think it can work and might be worth looking into. Maybe you should team up with ccozad for Project Army Knife. That is if that idea is still active.

"e.g. where/how are the messages stored/retrieved via AGPS, telcos assistance/acceptance, surely there would be a server/message/download fee for data who pays etc etc!"
Well you could send the GPS data to a online server easy. As far as cost that would depend on the plan. My guess is free for most plans or the cost of a text message.

The users purchase a subscription? Why wouldn't they just make a flicker album out of their travel photos and link it to any number of social accounts where they can compare with their friends' travel records. They could also blog their travels with accompanying photos (many already do this)? This idea might be considered as a "lightweight version of blogging" (postcards). Are those that are not inclined to create a blog likely to pay for subscription to log their photos as postcards?

I WAS HERE!
---Does this count?

I like this idea, MagicKaito.

How about allowing the sender to edit the entry and qualify the "eCarving" in different levels of meaning for a particular time in the future--even sad memories are sometimes cherishable. But, even bad memories can be enjoyable --they might remind you why you're glad he/she no longer in your life.

Based on the mood you assign, and the mood you are in, music is sent for you to buy... it could be a "we've only just began..," "looks like we made it," "Pina Colada" or "liar, liar" :)

My two-cents.

So, here is a business

Summertime
Summertime Posted: December 18, 2007, 12:31 am

"The users purchase a subscription?" After I posted, it occurred to me that friends, family, and "passers by" will be leafing through these photos/postcards, so the traffic might afford the option to sell advertizing instead of subscriptions. Still, I think many people would form their own media projects and display from their own web pages.

Magickaito Posted: December 18, 2007, 8:09 am

Thank you all very much for the reply. Although my ranking is dropping but I am really happy to see smilies from all of you. Looks like this idea is much more acceptable than my previous...Maestro Presenter. ^_^

Indeed, Summertime, I myself would not want to use it if it is based on subscription. Since this is very location based I believe showing ads will do ^_^ Thank you for putting some thought into this!

Ooper, no wonder you have so many ideas in CH because I can tell that you are really someone with lots of imagination! Linking it up with music is creative. Personalized music in public space can be a project by itself! Some times back, I did have some other serious ideas about personalized music streaming in public place before.. if you are interested in this area we can probably have further discussions. Oyeah :)

Kevin, glad that you like the idea. Yes. this idea can probably differentiates itself from others online websites by FIRST positioning itself to be a time capsule system that collects meaningful messages, SECOND I think this World Guestbook should only allow messages to be posted by mobile phone when you are physically standing there...

Spam is likely to happen. but I always believe mobile application can control spam better than websites since it is not anonymous, we can limit entries by phone id etc.!

After all, this comment is the best:

"As people have been carving initials in trees for centuries I think there would be a market for it."

rough_edges
rough_edges Posted: December 18, 2007, 3:35 pm

I like the idea, but I was wondering since you're only accessing the service by phone, would it be possible to at least view the entries online? That would at least give you more adspace.

ooper
ooper Posted: December 18, 2007, 9:30 pm

I hope CH will have better ranking criteria in a future version :) What I call the Popularity Contest has become so-o predictable. It's almost like a Day and a Night shift. Whoever's winning depends where daylight is...:)

Anyway, 4 stars from me. Here is why:

Originality
Simplicity
Presentation
Open minded
Non spyware
Research
Do I like the way it feels? Hell, yeah.

Profitability, Quality, Affordability, Fitness, Need? All needs work. But hey, the Facebook kids are still trying to figure some of these out...

Quote of the day: "But I would love to see people utilizing such an application to leave meaningful messages instead!"

Day and night shift...get some rest and "May the best idea win!"

Not a bad idea. Is AGPS + SMS available on all cell phones? Can your server determine the geographic location of the user just by the SMS message received?

Will the SMS message be sent to a phone number? I think you can send SMS to e-mail addresses right?

How do you make money? Ads on the website?

Kevin_Cox
Kevin_Cox Posted: December 19, 2007, 5:33 am

"Is AGPS + SMS available on all cell phones? "
Well AGPS is required on cell phones for emergency calls. BUT, and this is a big BUT, Most phones don't make it easy to access. But, you can access it for a lot of phones. So, it depends big time on the manufacture and service provider.

If we are talking Google Android then it would be standard and easy to access.

I don't know for sure if this idea will work. Because of some other reasons.
What makes users want to KEEP this program on the cell? It is hard to get users to keep small programs like this or get users to install them.

How this could "make money": My best guess to do this is to keep the data on YOUR site but, let it get shared with OTHER sites via plug-in. That way you can still host ads and get the in-bound hits from users that want to look at the data.

It's something like I had with the idea of Shoot The World http://www.cambrianh...er/ideas-id/srL7LmP/

Had the name earlier I was here, shoot a picture with your mobile on little stickers with a barcode. Oké not a new technology, but still a nice plan, combine it with questions of the locations and you will be directed to the next I was Here location.

We should make a big coöperative company so everyone can make money.

"Maybe you should team up with ccozad for Project Army Knife. That is if that idea is still active."

Project Army knife has taken a back seat to the droidthemes.com site (because droid themes received more votes) droidthemes won't win a 25K prize, but it might make a little niche for a few people.

Would still love to move project army knife forward... would need some outside interest to justify that though. Right now my family is taking priority and CH projects filling in the gaps. With the exception of droidthemes, I actually would rather spend my time working on other people's projects. It is kind of this "pay it forward" experiment I am trying where I try to make other people's ideas happen and see if the pendulum of good fortune swings back my way.
