The Elevator Pitch

For multimedia artists who who arelooking for a way to freelance, the Rent-A-NewMediaArtist is a website that will give them that opportunity, while being able to upgrade their portfolio, and maybe even get permanent employment out of it.. Unlike Rent a Coder our product is targeted towards those who want to do creative projects rather than code.

The Idea

Run Down: This is a new media version of http://www.rentacoder.com. NM artists set up an account along with a profile/link to their website/portfolio. Clients post what they need and a starting bid. Artists post their bids. The artist that gets chosen then creates whatever the client needs (ie. 3d graphics, flash animation). The finished work gets approved by the client. Artist gets paid. There'll be a rating system for both client and artists (like Ebay/RAC). Just like RAC and Ebay, this site provides a secure way for people to do business over the internet. Money will be sent to RANMA for security. When the work is approved, money is sent to the artist, and the site gets a portion of it. Disputes will be handled by RANMA or a third party legal team. Issues: Software piracy - it will be the responsibility of the artist to ensure that they are using legal software. Legal issues arising from use of pirated software will be the sole responsibility of the artist.

I thought of this idea when I was...

... looking for work. I recently graduated with a New Media/Multimedia degree. I live in a small town where the only NM related job was web design, which went out of business and closed (I live in a small town). Since I plan on returning to univeriity in the fall, I can't move. Having utilized sites like Ebay, Paypal, and Rent a Coder, I started looking for sites that offered the ability to do that. Iwas hoping to earn some pocket change and maybe even a chance to upgrade my portfolio. I couldn't find one. Then I started thinking about setting one up and how to go about doing that. The problem is, my web design skills are lacking (I'm more of a 3D guy). I then remembered stumbling onto this site while looking for internship positions. So.. here I am... with my "first" idea.

Is sitepoint getting closer to what you want?

http://www.sitepoint.com/contests/?

contests for design (and coding). I am guessing you are looking to incorporate a greater variety of media. My guess is you will see these types of sites popping up over the next couple of years as crowdsourcing as a concept grows in popularity

Checked out sitepoint.. it's pretty close. You're right though, I am trying to incorporate other media, not just images or logos. The site I'm thinking of would have a very wide range of categories, from coding to digital art. Different categories would include but not be limited to Flash animations, 3D models and animations, original music, sound effects, audio bits. The audio idea came to me while making a film, but did not have a sound guy. If this site existed at the time, I could've quickly hired a guy to do the work for me. One thing that would be different from site point is that the bid amount would be unknown to the other bidders. Only the client has access to the work (preliminary sketches, rough designs...) and the bid amount. I think this would help generate competition between the artists (lower price for better work).

Also, going along the crowdsourcing idea, companies and small businesses could hire individuals to do certain parts of a bigger project. The only problem I can see with that is consistency, but that's where ratings come in. The higher the ratings, the more work you could potentially get.

It seems to me that www.elance.com already covers this well enough.
