Crowdsourcing represents the act of a company or institution taking a function once performed by employees and outsourcing it to an undefined (and generally large) network of people in the form of an open call.

The Elevator Pitch

For Travelers who want to go to places they're really going to like and share their experiences with other travelers the Travel Lucky is a social network for travelers and destination adviser that offers users access to classic social network features and a destination advisers based on the user's interests and preferences. Unlike travel agencies our product enables the user to find the perfect travel destination based on his Travel Lucky profile and other users' first hand experiences.

The Idea

Are you planning your next vacation or just another weekend trip but you don't really know where you'd like to go. Travel Lucky is a website that let's you make a profile where you enter information about yourself like age, gender, interests, hobbies, if you like sports, art, cuisin, sun, snow, etc. After you finish setting up your profile, you just enter the date of your trip and budget and Trevel Lucky gives you a selection of different travel destinations based on your profile, date and budget. The user can rate the results so over time the results will get better and better. There could also be a community section where user discuss their trips, upload photos and videos, exchange experiences, rate travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, places they've already visited. There could be monthly competitions and polls for the best travel report, review, destination, there could be a prestige and awards system similar to CH.

I thought of this idea when I was...

The site would finance itself from advertisement and maybe there could be a premium account for a yearly or monthly fee with extra content and this users could get more prestige points for participating in the community (but still not sure about this premium accounts).

The site would basically have two sections: 1. the travel destination part and 2. the travel community/social network.

I can't wait to hear your comments and don't forget to vote.

This site is very intersting but only with the right content and critical mass of people.
How will you do that?
Tommy

Lule Posted: July 29, 2007, 4:48 am

your right, i thought of that myself, these are the two main things that could make the site a success
the more users you have, the more content you get from them for the community part, for the other part of the site i thought that there could a technical solution, some kind of database or search algorithm that would search the sites of travel agencies, this would be the source for the travel recommendations
i also thought for the community/social network part there could be a prestige system similar to CH, users could post travel reports (and all the other things i mentioned before), other users will rate all this things and the users would gain prestige for rating other users content and of course when other users rate there content

for the critical mass part, there would be a big promotion campaign on all the popular web 2.0 sites, popular forums, second life, even WoW if someone who plays it gets involved, and here on CH and any other popular online place

i agree with you that for such a site to function it needs a large user base and the content it offers must be right, so thanks for your great comment, i hope there will be more of this kind

sounds good!

bcforrester
bcforrester Posted: August 16, 2007, 11:23 am

This sound like something that could be easily developed and sold as an add-on for currently established travel sites like Travelocity etc.

coolnerd
coolnerd Posted: August 16, 2007, 10:07 pm

Alternatively to add incentive perhaps you could partner with the other travel sites in some way to give small discounts to strongly contributing members (for instance if you write a review of a location that other users highly rate get 5% off next trip booked through travelocity or something or what have you).

Lule

@coolnerd: i love your idea, this could be great way to expand the user base and to motivate the existing users to contribute more so the site will get more quality content

Lule
Lule Posted: August 17, 2007, 5:09 am

thank you all for your comments and suggestions, if you like the idea please vote for it

to make this idea reality i'm looking for skilled and creative people, like web designers and programmers, marketing people, investors and anyone willing to contribute and to turn this idea into a successful business

tobstar
tobstar Posted: August 17, 2007, 8:20 am

nice idea, I've just left the online travel sector and therefor know it quite well and I do think there is a place for this but you must move fast as there are lots of travel sites out there that already have the user base.

My question to you is how to you drive traffic to the site in the first place?

Lule
Lule Posted: August 17, 2007, 1:04 pm

tobstar thank you for your comment and thats a great question, well as i already mentioned to promote the site we'll start a massive online promotion campaign, promoting the site at all the popular online places (digg, youtube, myspace, facebook, secondlife, entropia, last.fm, etc.) that's why we need, besides programmers and web designers to work on the side, many people who'll work in this promotion campaign

flix
flix Posted: August 18, 2007, 5:32 am

I agree with Tobstar, you need deep pockets or a well connected team to get the attention of the crowds. Also, I do not see what is this more than another tripadvisor.com or igougo.com or boo.com?

Davelfc
Davelfc Posted: August 19, 2007, 3:35 pm

I don't think this is a new idea. And monster company's such as Google are already going that way with their services.

It could work, but you'll need a very distinctively USP to stand out in a competitive market.

annievee
annievee Posted: August 21, 2007, 9:43 am

Sounds like a very social trip advisor. I'm a traveler, love traveling, love weird and as they call "adventure" travel and what I love even more is finding out what the travel agents won't , don't tell you...real world experiences. What I miss from trip advisor is the sharing of information about when you come back or any real time element or the social connection even if virtual. For example, went to Panama to the gamboa rainforest...the brochures were great but didn't tell you about the lovely kuna indian ladies selling their handicrafts a 20 minute walk down the way. That was the GREATEST FIND...or that if you walked a few blocks out of the resort to the local corner store you could buy beer for a quarter or so...whooeeee

Then you can have showcase destinations, group travel, roaming travel reporters...onsite reports (would be great in hurricane season)...

wowowowow possibilities = endless

Lule
Lule Posted: August 21, 2007, 12:48 pm

@annievee: yes the possibilities are really endless, if we manage to atract a reasonable user base from the beginning this could become one of the leading travel advisors on the net

This is a good niche idea for those people who do not want to travel on the same vacations as everone else.

I like it!

can you describe how exactly this differs form say, lonelyplanet.com, virtualtourist.com, and a value proposition for yours?

i have had some ideas to build on where these types of sites leave off. But first, I want to get in your exact same page. ;)

ccozad
ccozad Posted: September 18, 2007, 6:40 pm

Lule, I believe the idea that Gods_Light was referring to is this one:

http://www.cambrianh...er/ideas-id/Qo9s3fB/

It won the "Reid Hoffman Tournament". What are the differences you see between your ideas? Would it make sense for you to team up with PeteC?

Lule
Lule Posted: September 19, 2007, 2:30 am

@kairaspo, ccozad: thank you both for your comments, i just checked PeteC's idea and it's really great, but the main difference Travel Lucky and Wicked Travel Site! is the community part, but i'll contact PeteC and see if there is a way we could work on this together

Urbanbumpkin
Urbanbumpkin Posted: September 20, 2007, 3:08 am

well it's good idea and share the same "Core function" of the"Wicked Travel Site!" Project which created by PeteC.

But ur lucky concept is outstanding easy for public to understand how does ur site work.

Lule
Lule Posted: October 1, 2007, 1:15 pm

I admit Travel Lucky and Wicked Travel Site share some basic principles but the concepts are dramatically different, I contacted PeteC about a possible collaboration, but his idea is at a far more advanced stage and he and his team aren't interested in a joint project at the moment, which I of course fully understand.

I'm looking for the right people to take this project to the next level, so contact me if you're interested. Thank you all for your comments and votes.

As TechCrunch recently said in a post about a new travel site, "How many travel sites do we need?"

I think that travel sites are definitely saturated.

GroundLoad
GroundLoad Posted: October 24, 2007, 2:12 pm

So has this idea already been through the voting round once? Why is it back again ? I don't see it being a 2.0 - the old comments are still on here.

Secondly, I agree with ccozad and gods_light - it's already kinda been done. Not in the sense that it's out there and ready for use but it's been done by another CH'er.

GroundLoad
GroundLoad Posted: October 24, 2007, 2:13 pm

Laracee- just checked it - and tripadvisor does already cover it.

been done.

GordonMcDowell
GordonMcDowell Posted: October 24, 2007, 3:10 pm

GroundLoad, comments aren't cleared off an idea because its been resubmitted (whether or not its been modified).

ccozad
ccozad Posted: October 27, 2007, 10:23 pm

One thing I like to see on ideas that are resubmitted is how much has been done since the last time it has been submitted.

So Lule, do you have a sample site available yet?

Kevin_Cox
Kevin_Cox Posted: October 29, 2007, 11:27 pm

Where are you going to get this massive amount of data bank that is also time dependent for all seasons. Also, ever hear of Google I'm Feeling Lucky what stops people from just typing in some hobby and the word country?

For example: snow sports winter tourist
Pack your bags lets go to West Virginia!

See, Google all ready has a data base. Same with many travel sites.

I have decided to put this idea up for sale at the bazaar, I just don't have enough time to further develop this business. Thank you all for your comments and votes. Right now I have to much going, but I hope to be back sooner rather than later.
