The Elevator Pitch

For young people who want to learn about a specific career or people who are looking to switch careers the Career Networking site is a website that will enable them to get in contact with people within that career and make educated decisions about getting into that career. Unlike social networking sites our product focuses on career and employment networking..

The Idea

A career networking site that helps people connect with others within that career. Users setup their page like a portfolio and post their resumes. Experienced users within a certain career can sign up to be mentors. Mentors can be ranked by mentees. Higher ratings get you posted on a higher level when users search for mentors within that career. Stats such as number of current mentees, total mentees, quality of advice and other related stats can be displayed. Revenue can be generated through advertising and through employers posting job offers. Replying to job offers are free. Think Monster.com combined with Facebook. You get tools such as career advice, job search tools, plus live help from mentors. You can also develop connections and network with people all in one site. This site would be great for those who are looking for advice about getting into a certain career or switching to that career. It can help them quickly get connected with the right people in that career.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I recently found out that the company I was working for was closing down. I though of this idea while browsing through some job search sites. I wondered what it would be like if you had a networking site that focused on employment networking and career development. With the growing need for job/career specialization, it has become increasingly important to develop an idea of what you want to do in life rather than just flitting about and career/major hopping. This site can help people make educated decisions about the career they are thinking about getting into and to develop the right kind of contacts for getting into that career. Its easier to find out whats out there when you can talk to live people.

Cool. I think you can never have enough sites like this, that help people learn what it is they need to get ahead in the workforce. You may want to link up with some of the other networking/employment idea people on CH. The College career/social network/job finding/job placement idea from a few weeks comes right to mind.

Thnx I appreciate your support. It's just came to me a couple days ago and it's been brewing in my head since then. Thx for the ideas. I'm also still trying to refine the revenue model and find other ways to make money.

I would say a subscription service may work. Offer up basic services for free, with some ads for monetization, and then give some beefed up cool features for a monthly subscription at a cheap price point. Like, $1.99 or something.

Interesting but not sold how do you plan to be different from the crowd of sites blanketing the web about jobs and careers.

System overlapped already. Having step by step updating, carrier goal paths to take, with alternative placing would be nice.

From kevin: Interesting but not sold how do you plan to be different from the crowd of sites blanketing the web about jobs and careers.

This is gives you the right kind of contacts needed to land a job in the career you are looking into. Think Monster.ca / Facebook. Not only do you get the right tools to find the right kind of career for you, but you also develop a network within your career. Also, lets say a person in a career different from your own is in your network, and they were looking to get into the kind of career you are in, it will be easier to do so. And the mentoring aspect is also very valuable. You get to talk to a person who has already walked the path you are planning to take. And who knows, if you make an impression on that mentor, that just may land you the perfect job.

This sounds like one of the angles that I am looking at taking JumbleLunch (http://www.cambrianh.../view/jumblelunch/). it won a previous idea warz tournament of champions.

I even talked to a university career services here and they are very interested in being an initial partner and expressed that many of the students that they work with come in and ask just for an opportunity to meet with someone to ask questions.

Anyway, contact me if you're interested in working on it.

The idea of networking experience is a good one, but needs refining. Understanding a potential new career or industry is a large task, and many have no idea what they really want to do.

More important is connecting new workers in a field or young workers in a type of business with a mentor. That mentor can help decide with the person if the field really suits them, and if they can guide them either in new ways to develop in the field they are in, or what other fields they can pursue.

SCOR, the Service Corps of Retired Executives is an organization that is always ready to mentor, and there are others... connect an idea like this, position it as mentoring and you may have something to launch out on.

Try to introduce an application for LinkedIn. It's a fast growing networking website for professionals where every business territory is represented. When you could introduce an application where these professionals could volunteer for being a coach, you could be well on your way! Try to work out an incentive program for the coaches. It seems to me that a cooperation with universities is a step in the right direction.
Good luck!
