The Idea

Create a grid client that uses the cpu recourses of the computer when its not needed to do massive calculations, like the one that the SETI program is useing and then rent it out to comercial bussiness. The profit will be shared between ous and a benifit of choise of those who have the client installed on there computers.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I like this. For people who aren't clear on what he's talking about, check out this link: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Now think about renting out this kind of power to businesses.

One problem: With thousands of computers being shared, each individual's take would be very low, maybe only a few dollars a year. Must be a way to address this--maybe by aligning with certain merchants and giving out higher-value gift certificates? Might be a better incentive to get a $10 gift cert to Amazon.com a couple of times a year than to get a check for 6 bucks once a year.

Also, as a user (sharing a machine), I would not want my computer being used by certain industries--tobacco, or nuclear weapons research, etc.

This was tried before with a project called "ProcessTree.com" back in the Old Days (around 1998) and it was a dismal failure.

I think the theory is good, but there's something in the details that just ends up not working right.
