The Idea

Social-networking sites may be sprouting like weeds, but there is nothing yet that operates as a bona fide marketplace, with members buying and selling their own creations as much as they blog, link, and post.

The idea is to build a web site with an international network for indie artists, musicians, filmmakers, authors, designers, and other creative types from dozens of countries. The site would create a "micromarket" for members' wares. For instance there might be a Chinese student filmmaker with a five-minute film who wants to reach a niche of U.S. users. He could find people willing to buy his films, and maybe a producer willing to bankroll more. There is a big market for hand made items that are probably not sold in ebay. Transaction fees would supplement ad revenue.

To start with we could find a core group of users and see some traffic in the site.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Thinking of selling some of my handicraft items in my garage.

So would your model be something like http://www.etsy.com/, but with a more digital focus?

Something like etsy.com but without the 404 (the link Laura posted included the trailing comma, trim that to see the site).

What does this provide that's different from a myspace/facebook page with a link to eBay or a yahoo store? I think it's a good idea and has potential. It's just going to be hard to differentiate from all the other options that accomplish the same thing.

There are a lot of art posting / print selling places (DeviantArt comes to mind first), but I think people tend to use them more an audience building tool than a selling one. The only professional artist I know anything about tends to post ebay commission auctions, but then she has a VERY large blog audience (Ursula Vernon).

IF you could narrow it down to just artist and then create a gallery for their works you might have something. They could post their photos or paintings, sculptures, etc. You could then have gallery openings and visitors could post in real time and comment on the artwork. It would be real cool to be able to chat with the artist. Change the art work for every gallery showing. you could also do a show for one featured artist. The trick would be to make the website really nice and have the art shown in such a way as to make it look amazing. I picture opening the site and having it look as if the Louvre had made the site. From there I could view the latest show or browse around. It would be cool to auction some pieces also. You would of course charge a modest amount to the artists for gallery shows and also take a clip when a piece is sold.

How would you accomodate for international copyright implications? I have an artist friend who, after selling a painting to a private buyer, found her art tattooed to mugs and t-shirts several years later. These had come from China and she received no royalties for her work. Would there be some sort of contract or protection for that and how would it be enforced?
