The Idea

Create a webservice so that users with net enabled cellphones, other forms of mobile connectivity or laptops at hotspots can broadcast their location from a GPS device, automatically, in real time to google maps, and have it sit on a website. Possible uses are, someone wants to bike across canada, and have their location updated on a google map on their personal homepage, in real time, this should be obtainable with a gps device, and mobile cellphone with internet connectivity in their backpack. Updating at intervals without their interaction. Anouther good use would be for families who do cross country road trips to visit relatives, somethign like this could help the hosts better judge when exactly their guests will arrive. People would pay to able to get this plugin for their blog or website. *update* When a user does not have internet, their location could be updated by their cellphone automatically sending an SMS to a server with their gps coord in the message.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Playing with my pocket pc and bluetooth GPS reciver.

Location based services (LBS - http://en.wikipedia....cation-based_service) could provide the framework for your 'webservice'. Good idea, though.

They did this already for the Tour de France. I'm not sure if they used the same technology or not. However, it seems like your suggesting to make this available on a broader range(ie. anyone with a gps enabled cell phone)?

My biggest question is whether the market is big enough for those who would want to pay for this service.
