The Idea
Netflix has proven a successful model for online movie ordering. However, they still physically ship you the DVD, and you have to physically send it back. Cable providers have On Demand movie downloads, but only a limited selection of new releases. iTunes allows you to download TV shows straight to your computer or iPod. Tivo and Yahoo! have teamed up to allow you to display a slideshow of your online photo albums on your TV. So we build a website that has a huge library a la Netflix, where you can order almost any movie you want. You register online and pay either a monthly subscription fee, or a per movie charge. You select the movies you want to watch, and after you set up your account on your Tivo, it automatically downloads the movies and TV shows you want to watch directly into your DVR. Let the Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, Road House movie marathon commence!

tivo does not allow you to do this right now?
Tivo allows you to download movies and shows that are scheduled to play on TV, but not to download any show you want, the way you would be able to from Netflix, or by going to your video store and picking up a DVD. This would just eliminate one more step.
Well. So much for my brilliant idea. I saw last night that Tivo and Amazon.com are teaming up to start exactly my idea next month.
