The next frontier is to tap the quiet genius that exists outside organizations to attract innovations from people who are prepared to work with a company, even if they don't work for it.

The Elevator Pitch

For any company intrested in advertising who requires a unique way of doing so the brand name is a ble to reach a global stage that people all over the world are interested in. Unlike the basic bland ways of advertising at the moment our product is unique and therefore valued.

The Idea

The basic idea is to sell advertising space in the shape of countries of the globe to company's all around the world. So when a advert id bought the company send in the logo they want to be placed over the county they have bought and when the country is clicked it will direct the user to the website of the advertisers choice. The purchase of country's is done by a highest bidder system. So the company who has paid the most money for the company owns it until they are outbid themselves. (The country is owned for a minimum of 3 days before the company can be out-bid.)
It is a unique advertising idea that gives an element of competitiveness and patriotism. It will also show a unique demographic chart as more money will be directed towards the MEDCs (more economically developed countries.) Both advertisers and the public (including press) will be drawn to the idea as it provides an ever changing and updating climate and also because the public would be interested in who owns their country.

The Logo

Scroll Left Scroll Right

I thought of this idea when I was...

My inspiration is a mixture between looking through old geography books, seeing that a unique advertising idea can take off and having a bit to much time on my hands! I have been crafting this idea for about 5 months now and only now believe its ready to be released to the public. The initial light bulb moment came while watching the news and a business section showing the worlds fortune, and i thought why not let them put their money where their mouths are!

At the moment all i have is an idea, no website, no way of displaying the dynamic atlas image.

If you are confused about the concept please don't hesitate to ask! I will get back to you ASAP

After seeing the vlogs, I'm sure Gord and Blue will give some stick about this idea! But maybe if i can address the potential problems before they make their vlog I won't be the berk who wins worst idea of the week Happy

Any constructive feedback is greatly appreciated.

Same as http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ but then just in another shape?

It worked once for the owner of http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ , but will it work again? I don't think so.

Sorry for the weird links, apperently CH liked to change them in some sort of weird not working HTML code....

Here is my comment without the weird HTML:

Same as milliondollarhomepage.com but then just in another shape?

cheers for the comment! I of course disagree with what your said as its a much more long term project with people out-bidding each other for their country of their choosing so it gives an aspect of competition. Company's will want to take control of their country to show their success and of course their business.

thanks again for the comment I'm very new to all this!

I am having difficulty understanding this concept.

Am I correct in assuming that this proposal is similar to Yahoo or Google Pay per Clic ?.
Except, that rather than search a product you click on a country ?

and find whatever the highest bidder is offering in that country?

even though it may have no relationship to what you are seeking ?

Please clarify,

Thank you

OK i'm sorry if it isn't totally clear,

so what the idea is, is theres a giant picture of the world on the front page of the website and this picture of the world. Its the individual countries of the world that are for sale for advertisement space. When a country has been bought, the company that bought it sends a logo in that is placed over the country and they're website is hyperlinked so if anybody clicks on the country it directs them to their website. However after 3 days other companies are able to out-bid the original buyer, then the whole process starts again with them sending in their logo and web-link.

It does not have anything to do with seeking items you need, neither is it like yahoo, google pay per clic.

Its just basically a map that has the countries in it for sale.

I hope this has cleared up some information for you,

please if you have any more questions just ask.

Mullac,
Why would anybody want to buy this add space?
Who is looking at it?

People would buy this ad-space in the same way people buy 1 mile stretches of the motorway! Its the fact that you "own" a country which is quite a unique experience/chance.

People would look at it for the novelty of the idea, it would cause intrigue into who owns what country. And with the bidder system the atlas would be constantly changing hands meaning that it would be a worth-while website to keep coming back to.

Hope that helps :)

This is no much difference than the previous idea about buying a Date/Time.

You are selling virtual stuffs again, everyone can do what you are doing!

If you want to sell real "countries", learn from Dubai....http://www.boingboin...rivate-islands-.html

Callum
Callum Posted: January 14, 2008, 2:30 pm

everybody can do what i'm doing but nobody IS doing what i'm doing.

this whole advert atlas will work if its the first of its kind out there. Thats why i need peoples help to get it started as soon as possible.

i would love to do it with real islands but i believe the start-up of it is a wee bit expensive, maybe is a few years time :)

We have a somewhat similar site, MillionDollarWebTV.com. (See in the Bazaar.) It works but it's slow going and sales so far have been through word-of-mouth, not from traffic.

http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/
...as JelmerBC pointed out, was the first thing that popped into my head.

I think MDHP illustrates that this sort of thing can work, but honestly I have no idea how MHDP was successful other than a young kid built it so maybe that got him some extra coverage.

The only reason people will bid on your countries is if the site has heavy traffic and I don't know how I'd start that.

Google have made millions with small, simple ads for one reason - they put them on sites that people visit! Who is going to visit your content-less site, and why?

do you know if the countrys of the world have there shape registered as trade marks or logos that cannot be copied.
ie like canadian tire the canadian hardware store is known by a red triangle.

register all the shapes of the world countries or even states and then let business bid for them to keep.

could i register the shape of nova scotia i wonder ?
if i did who would like to buy it now that it is of value ?
i think an aution that was well advertised in the business section would create a bit of interest and the highest bidder would get the usual PR.

Callum
Callum Posted: January 18, 2008, 2:15 am

I think the am,in pull factor of the site will be in the interest of who owns a particular persons country. We could gain more interests by publishing a blog and keep news and stats up to date.

Like propertygeek stated good PR will be either the success or failure of this project.

MDHP was a big influence on the idea (alex tew studied in the place where i live!) however i believe the shape of the adverts is enough to gain attention by word of mouth alone.

I personally don't think registering the shapes of country's is a good idea, some company's already have the logos of their country's as part of their logo , and i don't really won't to part of some legal brawl across the globe. Its a good way to look at the idea though.

thanks for your questions keep sending them my way!

I know I am late to this party and this is an old thread, but I just wanted to ask everybody what they think of this idea as a business model for an open encyclopedia or almanac where people sponsor articles rather than countries.

What do you think?
