A prince who is not himself wise cannot be wisely advised: good advice depends on the shrewdness of the prince who seeks it.

The Idea

There is a lot of very useful stuff on usenet going back almost 30 years and each day there is masses of new content. However it is somewhat spoiled by spammers, flame wars, excess cross posting and inappropriate content. If the posts could be rated up or down like CH and Reddit, then it would become much easier for people to filter for the relevant content. Like Reddit, the good posters could develop "karma" meaning that their future posts would gain prominence and their good behaviour would be rewarded. The usenet groups would have RSS feed featuring just the recommended posts over a certain threshold. Makes money from adsense, and plugins for native usenet readers to take advantage of the filter settings and also enhanced security for spam free posting.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Having posted to usenet since the 1980s and seen it gone down hill lately as websites take over, however usenet is still surviving. The websites are also fragmenting the market.

I like Usenet. Still, it's a bit old hat these days. I voted for this idea but I don't see it going anywhere with this crowd :-)

Usenet? what's that... :)

I don't see the next billion web users flocking to usenet. It will never die, but it will fade with time as newer communities emerge.
