The Idea

Have satellite phone available through your GPS unit. It could easily be handsfree and for those that use these devices (such as myself) then you know that they are constantly evolving.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Why Not it would work and in todays age with XM and Sirius radio I am sure that the upstream part of this is fairly easily rectified.

The satalites that send the GPS signals are different than the satalittes that send phone signals, from what I know. So the device would have to connect to two satallites I think.

In theory it would work, it's pretty straight forward.

Hi,

The Thuraya SG-2520 offers Satellite, GSM, Tri Band and GPS Tracking.

It weighs only 170g. ( around 5oz) I think that perhaps it should meet your requirements ?

See link below:

Hi Threeg5,

I wish you could/would !

Please give it your best shot, and good luck.

Satellite Phone charges are way too high.

threeg5, why should a phone (and service) like this be affordable? Its a fricking SATELLITE PHONE! Do you own any satellites? I don't own any satellites.

That means the boys with satellites get to charge whatever they want.

Threeg5 i've always thought about something like this, however, only for emergency rescue situations. Imagine paying perhaps 25 dollars for a gps unit that had satellite phone capability; however, it is for hikers and campers or yachters where they can call emergency with the phone.

By what technology does the gps service in GM cars talk to drivers that have had accidents? Can that be used? Or piggy-backed on?

Hi threeg5,

You may want to contact the Thuraya Development Programme, they are friendly people and should be happy to share ideas with you.

You may also wish to note that Satellite operators are subject to the same Free Market forces as the rest of us. Global Star, Inmarsat are not a monopoly, they are active competitors.
