The OnTour Widget does this well already... disregard this idea.
You just missed one of your favorite bands that was in town? Why?... because there's no easy way to currently monitor your favorite groups and keep tabs on when they come in concert. Ticketmaster is trying to implement this via their personalized ticket alerts feature but in reality I've tried it and it's worthless- more an excuse for them to spam you with unrelated shows. I want a service that will be useful within 1min of me visiting the web site. I want to upload my iTunes.xml file, have it parse through my favorites and most played music, check the Billboard.com database and MySpace to find out what upcoming shows from my favorite artists are going to be in my hometown and then give me the option to receive email alerts or expose a custom RSS feed that allows me to monitor for updates.
I play in a band and we do email blasts for each show. I know myspace attempts to aggregate multiple bands on one calendar but there is no good way for fans to subscribe to updates across all their favorite artists. There needs to be a simple solution that integrates with a tour database and lets people monitor their favorite artists when their tour brings them to town. Buy me a doughnut if you implement this and it's a hit.
there are a few ideas like this floating around on CH. Im guessing an amalgamation of them might make for a good alert service.
There's also definitely money in this, advertising would be profitable with this kind of service.
