The Idea

Website that gives a childsafe button+link, much like the better business bureau, for approved child friendly and safe sites. Website owners can submit their links to be approved, and if they are accepted they receive a code to insert into their website displaying the childsafe button and link. This demonstrates to web surfers that the website is approved for children and does not contain inappropriate material. Websites may be charged for the initial approval process if so desired. A contract must be signed (digitally) and breach of the contract invalidates the button code for that user, thereby removing the childsafe logo from the offending website regardless of whether the code is on the site or not. Option to display "Unsafe for children" if contract is breached.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Lack of such a thing online.

Good idea, but unless you have a serious marketing campaign in place, most webmasters won't be aware of this service and thus, won't be able to submit their web sites for approval. As a result, children using your "child-safe" service will only be able to access an absolute minimum of websites, and may not be able to use the web for research etc. due to this filtering system.

If you do have a way of getting this system in place across the majority of web sites, consider also allowing webmasters to rate their site "adults-only" -- many web sites containing explicit content actively prevent minors from seeing adult content in order to operate ethically.

I believe that IE's content filter works on a ratings system, but I don't know who applies that rating, or how many sites it applies to. Research this and other existing content filters before resubmitting your idea.

something like a spam button or web conscience from the previous round?

Questions:
1. Who ensures that the content stays child friendly?
2. Who goes to get the childsafe button+link? The parents? Couldn't they just unblock the site with their internet blocking software?

I believe a number of these have sprung up over the years (too lazy to search for the traces right now), they all seem to fade for lack of adoption and trust. Another chicken and egg web problem, if everybody did it, it would rule the world - kind of like pets.com....

I see this potentially gaining traction if you could have an "age rating" tag that goes in a page, combined with some kind of trust certificate served by a central authority, and here's the kicker - get it adopted by 5 or 6 major players like YouTube(Google), Blogger, MySpace, WordPress, etc.

Great idea, try to get a deal going with web censoring software companies to have their products white list websites with your idea's logo on it.

I can imagine this working the same way as the 'valid XHTML' or 'valid CSS' tags. The issue of persuading enough people to adopt it is the big one though...
