Cambrian House is a very interesting idea - crowdsourced software. Their goal is to leverage the wisdom of crowds to both receive as well as filter business ideas, code and creative content.Ken Yarmosh, Jul 2006

For high school students who actively use social networking the mobile/internet application is a portal/ad generator that gives specific information and discounts. Unlike online only applications our product would do both and be location specific.
Facebook and Myspace aren't there quite yet- a mobile application for high school students specific to their area to offer ads for revenue and discounts based on location and their own school.
My nine year old is BEGGING for a cell- I've seen many HS students with IPhones. seems natural
Check out Facebook. It started out as a system for students.
I don't think facebook is here yet, neither is myspace.
Although Facebook is not there yet, a Facebook plug-in could easily be written using the Facebook API. The API uses standard HTTP POST and GET, any mobile device that could access the Interent could connect to Facebook and use a plugh-in as you described. Not trying to shoot your idea down, it's just that there is already an infrastructure built that could be extended.
Right- I am just not technologically capable of doing it myself and think if it was marketed properly online it could create an interesting niche for others to create their own social networks for their schools
You really think that Facebook's and MySpace millions of users would switch because of local high school activities? I don't.
No, not looking at a switch- i think it could be built on either platform and why not both?
more about the content than the format
The only reason why Face book worked was because they limit to only .edu domain emails. That are given out by collages. High Schools don't have them.
Kevin,
That's true, but now that FB has been opened up to the general public, a plug-in to address tlyden's idea can be created.
Plug-in seems to be the right answer.
Tommy
I can see facebook plug in, but it might be overlimiting- need something that runs the gamut?
You don't think facebook and MySpace are here yet? Just what penetration does a network have to have and how much money does it have to make to arrive?
Mr. H, sorry if it was unclear- not a statement of the penetration, rather the application isn't developed for them yet
But now that you mention it, I think this has the potential to help that.
In as much as students might be signed up for facebook, i think more likely on myspace, there are plenty that are not- though this is aimed squarely at a mobile market or high school user, I expect it would also lend itself to neighborhoods or other geopgraphical areas
this idea is not developed, you need more info.
tlyden - am I to understand that you're looking to develop a mobile ad-serving application, but using a social networking site (e.g. facebook, myspace, etc.) as your application's platform? And you want to serve up mobile ads to the site's users based on their demographics and geographic locations, when they access the site through their mobile devices (or online)?
Did you know that it's already been done? Read about it here http://www.phonecont...m/bm/news/1945.shtml
Or, are you looking to develop your own "mobile" Social Networking Site (eg. http://www.next2friends.com or http://www.zedmo.com) and simply include targeted ad-serving as your mobile site's main revenue-generate stream? Not really a new concept though (seeing as how it's being done on Facebook right now).
But Good Luck!
you know... hate it when it exists...
Got something to say?
