The Idea

Use textures on the road bed to send warnings to drivers.

This works like a phonograph needle (the car) traveling over a track (the road).

The road can then vibrate a message to the driver like "W A A A R R N N I N N G G - S S S L L L O O O W W D O O O W W N N."

I thought of this idea when I was...

Loud road bed that made it hard to hear the radio.

There are already road bumps that warn drivers that they are on the edge of a road.
The audible voice sounds unique.
How do you propose creating such a surface that produces enough sound without reducing friction and thus road safety?

Well the problem is that we people are lousy drivers. In the not so long future cars will do de driving part for us and I for one can’t wait till this becomes reality.

Not a bad idea... I've been on a road where it was grooved to make a musical tune when driven over at speed. To create vocal sounds would be difficult though, I think. If you considered grooving it to create a sound that goes to a higher, uncomfortable pitch the faster one drives, maybe that would have the same result. Just thinking.

They all ready have grooved roads to prevent drivers from going into the wrong lane or dozing off.

There are also these things like signs, speed bumps and other traffic control systems.

This would be awesome!

hmmm, isn't it very irritating?

Yes, a warning is irritating.

The tire wear would be minimal.

Production could be by a roll out layer that is glued to the road (expensive) or a roller with a design could roll over the soft plantmix as it is laid down.

Haven't figured out the best way to apply it yet. Ideas?

I think this would be to complicated, some people can hardly read normal signs.

I don't think you'd be able to modulate a road sufficiently to get intelligible speech. even 2KHz on the low end would be pushing it - how many Km would you need? Then there IS wear on the road.

I would piss my pants if the road started talking to me. Then i'd start driving faster to make its voice sound funny.

I can see people purposely driving too close to the edge to listen. Get some good lawsuit insurance.

This idea so so bad I have to comment.

Sorry

If you look at general road condition, they are just bad. You would probably end up with a message that would say " Grama needs milk".

The were and tare of are road are one thing... what about weather.
What are you going to do in winter... rain... sand storms... etc...

I can go on an on about this. If you want to make your idea work, link it to the navigation system and use GPS tracking to send your message.

This was a hazard warning idea, not an advertising medium.

Wouldn't you LIKE to be alerted to a hazard, especially while you are on your cell phone, oblivious to danger?
