Cambrian House is a very interesting idea - crowdsourced software. Their goal is to leverage the wisdom of crowds to both receive as well as filter business ideas, code and creative content.Ken Yarmosh, Jul 2006

I think there should be a virtual community where musicians, artists, dancers, and other creative people can make money by doing what they do best. Professionals, (as well as other people) can join the website and donate to who they like by how good they are. Or they can purchase a painting or CD. Donation amount would be decided not by voting, but how much work they have done on the website(a point system) and their talent and presence. Joining can be free, but the artists would have to pay a percentage to ArtsMarket of what they get from donation money they receive, or sales. Money also would be made From advertising.
Thinking over the Second Life Idea, and the Yuwie idea. I don't like when musicians and artists have to sell on a website that is filled with tons of other products not related to the arts. Everyone can do what they do best, and earn points by the amount of work that they do.
Art sites have been done all over the web. Next time you really should do a quick search before hand. I think it will help you out.
http://www.sellaband.com/ for art?
@Kevin: There are many art sites, yes, but I've not yet seen one like this; with the point system and the posibility to (easily) donate. (Selling your art is already possible on some art sites)

I really like what you are trying to do.
As a collector of Paintings, Art Glass, and Ceramics etc, I find it very difficult to make purchasing decisions from most website presentations., especially with regards to Artists who are new to me. A lot of the photography on websites is pretty amateurish.
For me it would help if a website could mirror a Gallery presentation. Do you have any ideas ?
With regards to the philantrophical side of your project. I have some experience in this field.
From my experience it is much easier to get donations if they are tax deductible. For this reason, I feel that in order for your project to succeed, you must structure it properly, especially with regards to taxation.
Good Luck.

Good comment Charon.
The other way to raise money is if people are able to invest with a possible good return on investment
If you plan to sell CDs and prints, consider linking to a scheme like Lulu and getting them to do the production, distribution, etc for you - no point reinventing the wheel, is there?

This would help you...
Have you seen Etsy? (http://www.etsy.com/)
The points idea sounds interesting, but I don't fully understand it. Are you proposing that the more points someone have, the higher their minimum donation amount would be? Or would it be one collective donation system with each person getting a share of the profits based on their rating?
If it is the later, I think there would also be problems with that. Say someone has been on the site for a year and have like a million points, wouldn't they always get a super high percentage of the profits and anyone new would basically be screwed?
Sorry if I am totally misunderstanding your idea, I really do think you are on to something and don't mean to sound like I am putting you down.
Got something to say?
