The Idea

A site offering users the ability to donate money and split that money up among listed charities. Once a charity has a certain amount of money, a cheque is sent to that charity with a list of the contributors. Users can choose as many charities as they want to make a donation to. for example: Joe deposits $50 and chooses 10 charities on the site. Each of Joe's 10 charities will now have $5 from Joe. Once a charity account reaches say $1,500 a cheque is sent to the charity along with a list of names of the contributors, Joe's name being one of them. each charity would have a personal page with mission statements, causes, photos etc... users can review the charities and rate them Charities can be listed by most donations, most clicks, favorites etc...

I thought of this idea when I was...

Never seen this before!

This does sound a little like Modest Needs (http://www.modestneeds.org/). I just posted a similar idea ("Little Emergencies") where the online contributions do not have to be towards something altruistic (e.g. Katrina relief); they can also be contributions for anything (e.g. a Honeymoon fund for newlyweds; or a Christmas fund; or a way to save up for a cool DVD collection).

I like the idea of the automatic payout. I think the missing part of the formulae (for all of these ideas), is a way for viable micropayments-- so small that they are painless-- like a fusion of SMS texting and a 1-900 service, where some of the collected fees get funneled into the charities' pockets. Then some could say, "Text 995440 to send me a quarter:" 20 cents ends up in charity's pockets; 5 cents ends up in the carrier's pocket and the sender get a 25 cent item on their phone bill.

Sounds a bit like my idea; charity social network site with evaluations; www.helpalot.org, project weblog; www.makingthesite.com

Ok, so it's a plug for my site, but it's on topic :D

Seems a sensible enough idea... it might encourage people to see that even their small donations add up.

Are you thinking of starting with a limited list of charities? Might be a good idea, to ensure that you do actually reach your target figures. Otherwise, you could agree to send out a cheque at the end of each year (or other arbitrary time period) even if the target hasn't been reached, to stop money getting locked away because not enough people have chosen a particular obscure charity.
