The Idea

Campaign to Make, Amend or Repeal a law using community power. People propose ideas of legislation they would like made, amended or repealed and people comment on it. The idea gets voted up by supporters and down by opposers and figures can be presented to politicians and the idea revised if necessary. The relevant geography of the idea is limited so that anyone can comment, but only people within that geography can vote. Also, when people register on the site they can optionally tag their location, details of what party they propose to vote for, their local representatives and so on. Lobby groups can pay to access this personal information provided the people grant access. Politicians can pay to get detailed behind the scenes reports.

I thought of this idea when I was...

The Scottish Parliament has one of the most advanced online petitioning systems anywhere : http://epetitions.sc...ttish.parliament.uk/ There are petitioning sites, but I see this as a stage before to determine support or opposition and to refine the idea first. It's also a step to get legislation more in touch with the general population and make democracy more real and away from the power of lobby groups.

Great idea, but how does it make money?

I doubt anyone would want a site where their personal information is sold off.

I agree with Maureen

Re the comments that people wouldn't want their personal information sold off. This isn't what is being suggested here, and certainly the YouGov.com model shows that people are willing to participate in large numbers to provide information about themselves (anonymously) for market research purposes.

...yeah that is quite interesting. I don't see why such a site would need to be built by the Gov here. They won't build one any time soon, so people can build it themselves, should be just as effective.

I have seen similar repeated behaviors on DailyKos.com type sites, so you'd think they'd have pages to consolidate such behavior. (As far as I know, they don't.)

And as far as privacy concerns... well if you trust the petition site, its not a prob. Just have to build a site people will trust.

I'd consider using such a site... either to create a petition, sign a petition, or (if I had any reason to) pay for detailed stats.

Lots of privacy concerns and appearance of a conflict of interest getting $$ from politicians.

This could be an effective way to poll people on the direction they plan to vote - that said - authentication that real people are voting and not gaming the system would be crucial.

You'll get the "tyranny of the majority". It is important to let different opinions exist in their own right and not vanish into compromises...

i better swallow the "tyranny of the majority" than the "TYRANNY of THE FEW" running the country the way SENATE run their shows even the Lower house have passed important bills already.

This iDEA return the true power of the People which is emancipated by the people via the rights of suffrage.
