The Idea

my idea is giving away free hangers to dry cleaners and put ads on it. hanger is made out of cardboard.

I thought of this idea when I was...

in the drycleaners.

Putting ads on dry cleaners isnt a bad idea in the first place. When you go to the supermarket you see ads on the buggy's and at pay desks so why not in dry cleaners. Maybe an idea for washing producers. You might want to contact Proctor and Gamble or Unilever, see what they have to say :)

I hate to ask what might be a rather obvious question, but have you actually tried making a cardboard coat-hanger? I can't imagine it lasting even long enough for use at a dry-cleaner's, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's easy to test...

Well this does seem like a sub-set of the FreEssentials idea...

If hangers OR tampons are being distributed using the same model, I'm sure they'd be distributed together.

Drycleaners used to use paper wrapped metal coat hangers (maybe they still do). The paper gave plenty of space for advertising (usually the drycleaner's name) and the metal coat hanger was... well... a metal coat hanger.

They all ready use paper advertising on the hangers in some places. Most of the time just the dry cleaners name.

Its like a cardboard hanger, distributed free to dry cleaners, the hangers pay for themselves (ads)

I'm confused ... how do you advertise on a tampon ? I see public exposure being an issue ....

I think you still have to figure out how to make a cost efficient, sturdy cardboard hanger (if you are not going to pay attention to the points raised by Kevin and myself). The first silk suit that falls off one of your cardboard hangers, because of poor design, will kill the idea for that drycleaner and word will get around fast.

its like a cardboard shaped as a hanger, and it supports the clothes.

IDEAPOTHEAD
IDEAPOTHEAD Posted: January 16, 2008, 7:18 pm

and the ads are printed on the hanger itself.

IDEAPOTHEAD Posted: January 16, 2008, 7:19 pm

the drycleaner doesnt have to be wire hangers that cost $.50 each AND it doesnt end up in landfills.

PeeJayEl
PeeJayEl Posted: January 16, 2008, 7:48 pm

Yes, I see the idea about the shape. The concern is the strength and durability of the hanger. How much will it cost to make a sturdy cardboard hanger, there are printing costs and you have to feed the rep who is selling ad space on your hangers.

Also, what's to prevent your cardboard hangers from ending up in the landfill? I can open any closet in my house and find more wire hangers than I want, but I'll never pitch them out. The wire hangers are reusable and have a very long life, I'd venture to bet MUCH longer than a cardboard hanger.

If I am a dry cleaner I think I would rather advertise my own business. The idea would be to bring business back vs advertise for other business (even if they are not other dry cleaner)

Hello all - I'm a partner on a private company that distributes dry cleaning supplies including all types of wire hangers and all kinds of plastic bags (those that go on top of the clothes. The issues faced by dry cleaners have been the quality of the cardboard hanger and feasibility within the operation. First, the garment doesn't sit properly on cardboard hangers and second, within their operation, staff usually slides the garments back and forth between stations (causing the hook to deteriorate and get stuck when sliding).

Large consumer products companies such as PG, Unilever and Dunkin Donuts have already tried to subsidize the cost of the hangers (and plastic bags) in exchange for ad space, but they didn't have much success. It was hard to track effectiveness of the ad. Anyways, I would love to find cardboard hangers that work to replace the wire hangers 'cause the price of metals have been going up like crazy and is killing our margins. Best to all.

LeoC that is a great comment. Good feedback.

So I think this idea would work better if it was a design for an effective cardboard hanger, then you would paten it and license it to company's.

"Its like a cardboard hanger, distributed free to dry cleaners, the hangers pay for themselves (ads)"

Even the business model doesn't work - the dry cleaners might take them but if all the hangers are doing is paying for themselves you're not making anything!

Might be better to print the ad on the cellophane bag that clothes are returned in

Think of a hanger and the size of clothing being hung on it, Most oversized men and women find hangers to short to hold the large garmets they wear, My adaptation to your idea would be to have an expandable hanger, Plastic of course with some ratchet device the same as use in plastic ties, that way it could be shortened ,,or lengthed to fit a variety of sizes, I know this from experience of doing laundry and having to clothes pin larger items to smaller hangers

plastic
defeats the purpose wouldn't you say?

I guess that all depends on the women now doesn’t it? Muwaha. :-)

As far as the idea I think a cardboard coat hanger could hold up enough to put someone stuff on it and take it home. It could be made out of the thicker cardboard (like what they use for wrapping paper, and carpet rolls.)

Honestly. I don’t think people would look at the hanger. You might be better putting a custom paper (like what they use for paper bags at the grocery store) garment cover over the whole thing. Then putting advertising on that. Just my 2cents.

I don't see any follow-up by IDEAPOTHEAD since LeoC's excellent comment so... I'm only commenting to clarify my tampon comment to TMentink.

The advertisement is actually an audio clip that plays back when the string is pulled, powered by a small watch battery inside the tampon itself.

NOT.

WHERE DO YOU THINK THE AD IS GONNA GO!?! On the packaging, not the tampon itself.

Sheesh.

TMentink Posted: January 24, 2008, 12:51 am

I like the idea. But honestly. I think that it would be kinda creepy if my gf pulled her tapon out and it started to sell her somthing. Maybe its just me. :-)

Like the idea though. heh
