Mistakes will be made. But if a person is essentially right, the mistakes he or she makes are not as serious in the long run as the mistakes management will make if it undertakes to tell those in authority exactly how they must do their jobs.
William McKnight, 3M

Cambrian House began as a crowdsourcing community using a wisdom of crowds based approach to discover new business and technology ideas. These pages are being kept online as a technology demo to showcase Chaordix™.

The Idea

An entire empire of online-based sysadmin services -- performed by up and coming students in the field. Middle School, High School, and College students interested in the field would be introduced, through the website to various linux, freebsd, and other unix distros. They would be encouraged to install them on their own systems, or get a shell account provided by the site to play around on. After a period of time exploring, performing suggested tasks, etc. -- They would take differing levels of profficiency tests. After passing a certain level they would be assigned real-world clients. The company would offer system administrative services to companies and individuals at discounted rates (slightly lower than market standard, to entice people, but the kids will still make more than minimum wage). There will be levels of sysadmins to deal with easy vs difficult problems. All to get kids interested in unix and System Administration. Schools may ask kids to participate for a grade.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I'm always interested in teaching people new things, and I grew up with a tech sysadmin mentor, and I think it really helped me over the years. I'm also looking to start a Boston Community Colocation project, which this could go hand-in-hand with. This idea of course, can be expanded to other areas of IT, System Administration and Security -- All areas where the tasks can be performed over the Internet, and continuing with a focus of young students participating to get them involved and excited about technology.
