The Elevator Pitch

For People who pay upwards of 15$ per c.d who feel that recording media as vulnerable as cd and dvds should be backed up by the manufacturer in an online repository the media merchadise idea is a panacea that will provide digital backups for people who have PURCHASED their media. Unlike the way things are done right now, if you scratch a cd it is gone forever our product acts as a solution in that regard.

The Idea

The idea is very simple: if you buy a cd or a dvd, then you should be able to reclaim the media if it is scratched. Ideally this should be the responsibility of the recording company that is responsible for manufacturing the media. A site is created whereby the digital copy of your media (cd/dvd) is available. A copy is allocated for you to use, based on the serial # on your media. The copy is digitally signed and can only be used by the requisite user who downloads them.

I thought of this idea when I was...

noticed that my sneaker pimps cd was badly scratched

Great minds really do think alike. Here's my similar idea: http://www.cambrianh...er/ideas-id/x1qAkvE/

They aren't identical though. I'm not a huge fan of DRM or copy-protection. The original CD wasn't copy protected. Why should the digital copy be?

There is potential here. Perhaps when CH opens up IdeaForge we could put our heads together and find an even better solution.

hey man,
I like how you presented your idea.

But in all fairness, the onus should be on the recording companies to provide a service like this for free.

That being said. with more and more digital content pushed out to the markets, we need a universal way to be accessing our media. If I paid for it, i should be able to use it anywhere and however i choose and more than one location at the same time. (mutliple ipods, multiple machines)

- I hope the shifting trends forces the RIAA to reconsider it's neanderthal policies.
- if you think about it, there is really no consumer protection when it comes to recording/electronic media. that has to change.

I have some more ideas when it pertains to this. from your post i can correlate that you are no fan of DRM ..and i have mixed feelings about it. But, how RIAA has handled the situation has actually hurt the market than to encourage more people to try new music.

There is already a shift taking place. Upcoming artists signing up at torrent sites like --> http://www.jamendo.com/en/
This is the future.

RIAA is stupid! downloading encourages people to buy music

I wish they stopped whining and harassing the average joe, drop the price of the media, and put more free content out there.

That's why you back it up on a hard drive.

but thats the whole point becca

when you are paying upwards of 15$ for a full album, you should not be concerned with backing it up

This also ties in with other ideas:

Together when they work in unison, i believe we have some solid potential:

1)
