Crowdsourcing represents the act of a company or institution taking a function once performed by employees and outsourcing it to an undefined (and generally large) network of people in the form of an open call.

The Elevator Pitch

For online poker players who don't wish to gamble with real money the PokerTycoon concept is a online poker platform that lets players win real prizes without spending a dime. Unlike PokerStars, PartyPoker, PKR, etc. our product focuses on the "playmoney" aspect of poker, monetized entirely by advertising.

The Idea

The underlying concept is to monetize online play money poker. As it stands, the major poker sites offer play money tables simply to attract new real money players. The bottom line is, you have a captive audience staring at their computer screens. Why not let companies sponsor tables, placing their logo on the table and streaming video advertisements while the game is played? From the players perspective this is appealing because the sponsors offer prizes, discount codes, free trials, etc.
The above is the most basic rendition of the idea. There is no limit to the extent this can be taken. Merging this idea with a SecondLife type of twist opens many new doors. Modifiable characters, the ability to purchase products for your character, or the matching real life products for yourself. Imagine giving Gucci the ability to promote a new product line by recreating that product line for sale within the game, and then allowing the users to also make a purchase in real life.

I thought of this idea when I was...

This thought came to me when using PokerStars and realizing I had 100k in my play money account and nothing to do with it. Play money tables are just a free service offered by the poker sites in an attempt to entice new players to play for real money. There is no reward for doing well at a play money table. However, there are many players who don't intend to play for real money, but still enjoy playing poker online. This concept would allow those players to play for free with the chance of winning something of actual value without the risk of loosing any real cash.
I would also like to note, when you're sitting in the lobby of a poker platform, lets say pkr.com, there are many many more people playing for free than playing for real money. There's a huge audience that is, for the most part, completely untapped.

The idea is nice , merging money making gambling business with some cool concept like second life. It will add more interaction , adventure and fun to the online gambling business.
But if people can play with real, that will have a good business potential.

Hey thanks!

It really depends on how far you want to take it. It can stay completely "free" with no real money involved using the advertising and branding to bring in an income, which I think would be a good start. Or you get into real gambling where advertising + table percentage income comes into play. Either way there's no shortage of online poker players out there, and I think if a "better" environment is created, people will come. An environment where no two players look the same and you actually have an alternative use for any "playmoney" you earn, it's just a more fulfilling experience.

And yes, if real money is supported, more doors open. If every purchasable element in the game is modeled after a real product, you could sell the real version of that product right through the "game".

But I still think easiest entrance is tapping into the massive number of people that play poker online, but never for real money. It's a large, captive audience staring at the computer screen; the advertising potential itself could cover the costs.

You should check this poker room out http://www.pkr.com/
They have taken the presentation of online poker to the next level.I don't think it treads on the toes of you idea but probably worth checking to make sure and also get an idea of where the online poker world is heading

I like how they've done the graphics and animations. Gives the game a little more depth. However, sitting in the www.pkr.com lobby, there's probably 20-30x more people playing with play money than real money. Monetizing the play money aspect is still being overlooked.

With the poker fad going around now this could do quite well. It seems everyone I know sits down to play some poker, and this adds a little extra to it which would get them hooked.

Good idea.

i would love this to be actualised. and if you are on creating a second life type of simulator... why dont we talk about casinos.. you will be able to play craps.. roulette table. keno.. slotmachines and so on.. then different tables for poker... different tournaments.. i bet this would go huge in the gambling industry as there are alot of money in this business. to create this plattform would need imensly alot of resources . programmers designers. developers.. animators. and so on...

Yea, you don't have to limit it to poker, and yes again, it is a large undertaking. A while ago someone bought an old gaming company, (Acclaim I believe?) and the plan was to develop games that would be free to download, monetized through in game advertising. You see new games doing it too, Need for Speed advertises for multiple companies. There's no reason the same concept can't be applied to the realms of play money gambling, in fact I think brand recognition would be fairly effective due to the longevity of a persons visit to a table.

Cool idea but I think it's an immensely difficult undertaking

It has been mentioned here and in private messages that this is a large undertaking. I just want to say that, should the idea evolve into an actual business, the development would be in stages. Stage 1 would be to create a service similar to the major poker sites and allow companies to sponsor tournaments (or just tables). We display their advertisement (logo, audio, video), they provide the tournament prize. Whether that's a website code for a discount on a product or a material product shipped to the winner's door, it's up to the sponsor. The idea in it's entirety can only be pursued if it can be proven that the poker community is a desirable audience for advertisers. I believe it is, but an investor doesn't care in beliefs.

you have a good idea here... my only problem is that the poker market is flooded, and I think (only my opinion) that the popularity of poker is starting to decrees.
