A market is never saturated with a good product, but it is very quickly saturated with a bad one.

The Idea

A Web-based tool that a company and their client can access that takes an project from idea to completion. The tool must allow for document mgmt, be ASP, allow for editing of documents/images online and track notes/changes. The tool should have work flow, alerts and meta information about the project.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I do this every day and there is no good tool for this. Each tool falls flat and is usually only good at one piece.

There is lots of competition in this space, especially from the Web 2.0 golden-children like 37signals. Can you pinpoint specific gaps in their services that you can fill or exceed?

Many companies use Windows Sharepoint services and advanced tools for the same. The above idea need a lot of refinement.

My current employer dropped their extranet in favour of Basecamp after I showed it to them

Yeah I think basecamp is a million users ahead of you on this one. And with all of the other plugins, new features coming out, and their extensive api they just released for 3rd party development, you may want to move on to the next idea.

You might be better off pitching specific enhancements (plug ins, third party tools...) to existing software. Working software is easier to add to than to build an equivalent application.

ya basecamp is great... also I think I remember CH was trying to move that way, but that may have changed.
