Long before the Internet, people gathered, shared ideas and connected to each other in paper form through amateur press associations or apas. For each issue of an apa, members create a zine and make enough copies for all the members. The zines are collected, collated and delivered to the members. The killer feature of this service would be the ability to create and track multiple comment threads. Think blogging crossed with Usenet. To that, add the ability to create communities specific to topics or themes and to regulate the timing of publications. So rather than the instant-feedback flame-inducing commentary, you can get thoughtful responses through a forced cooling-off period.
When I first started using Usenet, it was like an apa at light speed. This quickly became a bug as conversations sped on without me and the amount of good information in each post dwindled. Then blogs came along and it was almost like apas again. What they were missing, however, was the ability to track multiple comment threads. When Bob makes a comment on your blog that triggers something, I want to respond in a way that is easy for Bob, you and I to all track the conversation.
