The Idea

"...prepare to die." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/quotes
It's a subject rarely discussed openly. We're all going to die some day. There is a void in the marketplace for a web service that helps us prepare for death.

- estate planning
- life insurance
- legal and tax resources
- funeral arrangements: site selection, purchase, casket, stone, etc.
- digital storage of your Will **
- locked address book used for notifications upon death **
- named executor with authority to access postmortem features
- planning forum with friends and family = a place to discuss

There are so many sites dedicated to preparing for a newborn, college, retirement, a wedding, even travel. There is not much there to help us plan for the only sure thing in our lives. More important than for ourselves, the service is needed for those we leave behind. Those facing death can use advice on how to deal with common legal, practical, emotional, and financial issues.

** fee based service (~$20/year)

I thought of this idea when I was...

thinking the sad thought of having to deal with a loved one's death some day and realizing that I had no idea what would be involved and how unprepared I was.

i think some people feel depressed with the thought of planning for your death..

its a great and smart idea. but the business wouldnt be that good if people think theyre never gonna die.. ( you always hear "i dont wanna die")

so it would be har dto do this..

there has to be an incentive for people to do this.. also the religious reasons .. alot of religions does not allow you to prepare for death or something like that..

well check your market.. do some research... maby you will find a group of people willing to do this...

As Rizal noted, this is a business that has negative interest from the users, they won't go for it unless they really need to (like dentists). I doubt there's a big market for people who want to prepare for their deaths...

I don't know, one stop estate planning sounds good to me. This area of the market should be addressed.

This has potential.

But I don't think the name is appropriate. "Princess Bride" sounds like entertainment.

Maybe: "Final Plans"?

Just to clarify, I titled the idea "princess bride: ...." with the quote from the movie only for amusement. If editing of the idea is possible, I'll go back and change the text to be clear.

The business would be something like "Final Plans" as suggested by Maurreen or "PrepareToDie.com" or "IntoTheFuture" ...

Respectfully, here is how I would respond to nay sayers:

Is it a sad thought that we need to prepare? Well, yes. Is it necessary for our spouse and family and friends? It is.

It is not a dirty business, though many are quite successful: pest control, sewer treatment, septic tank removal, and so on.

It is not a harmful business, though many are quite successful: arms dealing, drug sales, gambling, and so on.

While, we are, by nature of being here on this site, among the first to jump at high-buzz mass-market high-end products and services, my bet is that we are also a group that recognizes that there are many unglamorous needs in this world. Innovation in servicing those unglamorous needs will bring great rewards to the provider and the customer.

I think the website for the service can be made to be sweet, campy, enjoyable.

People age, get older, have needs different from when they are young. Old age homes are a good example of needed services; not the most inspiring at first glance, but if run well, full of hope and good feelings.

As with any business, don't first ask if you would use it; ask if there are potential customers for it and how can they be made customers. In this case, everyone is a potential customer. The highest likelihood of use is by someone in their late 50s or someone with a parent close to death (sorry). Terminally ill patients, of course, do need to make plans. Again, I fully realize the morbid nature of the service, but stress that the service is necessary and beneficial as soon as the need arises.

Surely there is a business model for this... I'm not sure a yearly fee from the future departed is the way to go. Maybe a once off fee, but additional revenue obtained from Funeral parlours, lawyers, etc for listing their services on the site.
It would have to be a real step-by step, gentle approach.
People do think about this at some point in time as they make the effort to go and get a will drawn up.

I like where this is going....

I think this is a good idea. The baby boomers are just starting to turn 60 and they are thinking about estate planning. There are a lot of boomers and they have money. Perhaps the challenge is that they aren't early adopters of web technology unless it's really easy to use. Even then, they don't spread things virally the way the younger markets do.

One approach would be to go to one of the big funeral home services or insurance companies and build the app with their dollars. Or heck, take MacDonald's approach and appeal to the children of boomers.

People die. It's the only certainty about life. Good luck with it.
