For lower income families who cannot afford the luxury of environmental friendliness the Car Exchange is a charitable lottery that will help the environment, and the families while lowering overall fuel consumption. Unlike the standard model of charity our product is a head start that, through savings caused by the fuel efficiency, funds itself through completion of the lease.
The idea is to get gas guzzling high emission cars off the road.
On a website like Robin Hood Fund, with set judges, people submit their old beater to win the prize: a one year paid lease on a fuel efficient/hybrid car.
With sponsors (honda, toyota) there would be no more cash going out per monthly draw than RHF doles out to its winners. The goal is also a lease rate that is low enough for the winner to continue.
Save the environment and help people with a more fuel efficient (thus less expensive) and more reliable form of transportation that, through these savings, we could enhance their quality of life.
Single mothers drive the cheapest car they could afford, wasting all their money to get to work in a car that gets 18 mpg, a toyota prius gets 71 mpg at a $248/month lease that is $2976. The average family can drive 20000 miles a year. Based on $3/g west coast gas prices they would pay ~$2490 less, per year, in gas.
Sell the old car for parts.
Brand the new cars.

trying to buy a new car on no budget but I have moral objections to driving a pollution machine.
I have dreamed of being rich and doing a similar trade. Buying a bunch of new cars and giving them in trade for beastly gas guzzlers. This idea doesn't stand to make any money that I can imagine, but it does stand to get scads of attention for CH and the brilliance of crowd sourcing.

Interesting idea. I think the key will be getting someone to sponsor the website. I think it would be good advertising for Toyota or other car makers and so you might be on to something. Also, I wonder if you couldn't get a grant of some sort to cover this type of site.
It would be interesting to see and hear about people's old junker cars.
the place to start is by pitching this idea to toyota
why toyota.. pitch to all of the car companies.
hmmm..seems not much of a viable idea but is an interesting marketing hype for a sponsoring Car Manufacturer or dealer...
