A small bit of software that can be a standalone IM application or an add-on for popular programs. a user could click a button within and IM window allowing "Real-Speak" when enabled, their messages would be sent letter by letter in real time.
have you ever been in the middle of typing a long instant message, maybe a story or set of instructions or something, and the person asks some question requiring a one word response? backspace forever, or cut, message, paste, message... either way wouldn't it be neat to transform IMing into a more phone like conversation.
you could probably have it set up so its still one person at a time, your message is just displayed as its created, then hitting return would open up conversation to the other side and they could do the same before returning it back to you; or maybe you split the IM window in half so you could be typing something out on the left, and they could respond accordingly in real time in their own window on the right. anyone know how to create something like this? or if its even possible?
Never saw the need for it, but maybe others do.

wow, if people saw what I really said about them in IM before common sense stepped in and I reworded it to be nice :) I would be in trouble quick.
I don't think the solution to your problem is seeing the other person type letter by letter. Instead it should give you a better interface (GUI) to respond to the sender's recent message. Some more thinking needs to be done here. I believe that xtalk and ICQ optionally gave you the option of sending letter by letter.
..i dont see this would refrain the poor language usage (abbreviation chat lingo) but more proliferation and abuse.
my .2cents!
I'm sure one of the early implementations of IM did this, it might have been an early beta of ICQ
I would be annoyed by it in some ways because then I would see how slow people really type and all the mistakes they make...:) I think the reason why IM software has moved towards sending the entire message is because of the packet over head. If the info sent is one character, then 90-99% of what is sent will be be protocol wrappers. Very "chatty" applications clog and congest networks. It is better to lump the messages you send to reduce over head.
Besides, why not just speak anywa?
well you could create a new IM infrastructure... i don't think you could effectively retro-fit this on top of MSN or GMAIL CHAT because people at the other end would need same add-on, and there'd be zero adoption. Maybe an extension to GAIM that makes it into the main distribution would work? But as far as launching a project or biz around this, its really hard to imagine it happening.
yeah i just kinda threw this up here because i thought it would be cool and and i was bored one day, you all make great points and i don't really see this going anywhere, thanks for looking!
