This simple browser extension (for Firefox, Safari, Opera, IE) allows you to browse websites with a crowd. For every browser window you open, it also opens an IRC client with a special channel populated exclusively by people on this domain. Finding the domain"s chat room too noisy? Tighten your focus to be directory or even page specific. You can even tighen to friends-only or friends-of-friends, etc. . GB comes with 'Follow The Leader' mode, allowing users to easily tag one another as leaders or followers. Once this is done, that the follower"s parent browser window will do whatever the leader does. . How does this make money? Websites can pay to deploy GB bots that answer questions, performs tasks, and interact with users on that domain/directory/page. These bots would be non-annoying and helpful. Websites can also pay to put GB-certified customer service reps within their domains, allowing the chance for contextual interaction between the business and the web browser"s user(s).
I was browsing Amazon, perusing a product Amazon said was quite popular, and was curious about the actual quality of the product. Reviews are static: I had *questions*. Many businesses have live chat, but companies like Amazon can"t afford to staff it due to slim margins. If I was using GroupBrowse, they wouldn"t have to staff anything; I would simply turn my 'focus level' up from 'individual' to 'friends-list', domain-wide, and see if anyone was around. Then I"d up it to 'friends-of-friends'. Eventually I"d find someone I could trust that was cruising around, willing to help me, and I could ask them a question. . This idea combines collaborative browsing, social networking, online chat, instant messenging, and collaborative/contextual support & sales. . The other cool thing about the GB system is with a close eye towards secuirty, privacy, and quality, GB APIs could be released that would lead to GB-mashups, GB-hacks, and viral adoption of GB.
This is a beautiful idea. We wouldn't need the #cambrianhouse IRC channel in this case :-)
Some other points to consider:
* Tabbed browsing / multiple windows == multiple chats?
* How do you get a unique identity? Like AIM/Yahoo where you register a username?
* You'd need to be able to say whether or not you wanted to view GB for a particular site/domain. E.g. I don't want to visit the Google channel.
+1 from me - this would rock.
Really nice idea. Opening up otherwise static websites could really change the way people surf the net, more like visiting a shop than visiting an online store for example. Though I think this deserves more than a simple browser extension as it is a really good idea. Selective audio and video chat would also be cool.
Well, I'd have to say that on the downside it seems there have been a bunch of ideas like this implemented. See:

On the plus side though you can see there is a certain diggableness to this sort of idea.
Motiggidy, you're right. This idea still has some merit, but definitely there are a number of similar projects out there.
