Picture a website where you upload files one at a time, and each file is allocated a code... After uploading you just record the number (ie. physically pen it on the joystick, attach a sticker to the PCI USB Card, save it on your phone, etc.) Whenever you want to access that file again, all you need to do is go to the site and refer to the code. (or include in the url, ie. www.filedump.com/1a3v4) This application would be useful for me because I hate keeping driver CDs around, and it would be easier to keep them all in a secure and globally accessible location. This solution allows you to write a simple code on each device. Of course this could be used for things other than drivers... Like for homework or even for bloggers, etc. Money could be made in the following ways: - Make users buy downloads (competetive price) - Advertising on website
Couldn't find the drivers for my game controller!
Maybe better would be a site that aggregates all existing drivers & versions + allows people to upload drivers that are not known within the system yet.
I don't think people would pay for the service but if you could have a single site for access to all known drivers, the business model could be built around advertisement mainly.
1 possibility would be to have a kind of "wanted" section in that site where people offer money for someone to find/upload a specific driver for them.
Imhotep:
When I proposed this idea, I used drivers as an example. However, I didn't intend on this being a driver website. I was thinking more 'upload once and forget' sort of thing... Sort of like tinyurl, where you can upload a file and just remember a small code.
The driver analogy was only an example of a practical use of this idea.
Thanks for the comment!

While the indexing part is a twist. Free online storage has been avilable for awhile. I use PCLinuxOS and if I donate $20 I get an ID & password for unlimited highspeed storage for a year.
