craigslist.com has this feature already, along with a very large userbase.

That's not to say it couldn't be done better - especially if it were tied into social networking sites like MySpace

oops - I mis-spoke -- they have a feature similar to what you have described. Also, they don't take money from either party.

It's been done, as far as web services/coding goes - http://www.scriptlance.com - basically works the way you describe. Buyers put money into their accounts, solicit developers on the site, and when the work is done, the amount agreed is transferred to the developer's account.

This way I think could be more profitable
