The Idea

A free equivalent of gotomypc.com that allows people to expose their desktop to themselves or other users over the web, for free. The site would be monetized by context-sensitive advertising, based on the content of the host system desktop and certain pre-designated areas of the hard drive.

I thought of this idea when I was...

... frustrated with helping non-technical Windows users trying to disinfect their diseased operating systems infested with spyware and viruses. Gotomypc.com is a slick and seamless approach, but it costs money and it is a lot to ask of the person you are helping to sign up for an expensive subscription. The other alternatives such as VNC require too much expertise from the end user, and when you throw DSL routers with built-in firewalls into the picture, things become downright messy. It would be nice if there was a free solution that was as easy to use as gotomypc.com -- people would put up with quite a lot of ads as long as they were able to accomplish the task at the end of the day.

Looks like logmein.com has a free version of their product, which is not time limited but is just missing a few features like file transfer.

Add in Hamachi with logmein and you have file transfer. Although, Logmein.com just bought hamachi so we have yet to see what Logmein is going to do with Hamachi.

I've written an open source equivalent of GoToMyPc based on vnc (another free one). Its called <a href="http://www.rustyspigot.com/software/godesktop/">Go Desktop</a>
