ESI works to reduce the energy consumption and impact the built environment has on communities, cities, countries and continents. By designing efficiency projects that 1) reduce emissions, 2) increase environmental quality and 3) are paid for by the cost savings they create.
The premise is simple: just as you may upgrade aspects of your vehicle to get better gas mileage, our energy efficiency projects for commercial and residential facilities save 15-25% on energy costs. Since these numbers are guaranteed by our engineers, the savings can be used as payment for low interest financing. This allows businesses, schools, communities, coops and all in between get upgrades without having to outlay large amounts of capital.
The projects also feature sustainable measures such as pollutant source control, recycling/waste management and improved ventilation to increase the indoor environmental quality.
Last year as I was working late, a custodian came into our office to clean up and empty the trash and recycling bins. Although I had never been what you would call a 'tree hugger,' every chance had always been taken to recycle or reduce electricity/water usage at home and in the office. This is why I was so surprised when I noticed that as the custodian finished her rounds she took the recycles we had collected from the day and carelessly tossed it in with the regular trash!
My initial reaction had been to angrily chastise the custodian for being so inconsiderate, but it occurred to me that there was a reason why she had done what she did; environmentalism is too hard! This is when I first looked to introduce easy, low cost methods for recycling, green cleaning and maintenance for property managers. As time went by our mission began to encompass large scale projects, allowing facilities to become 'green' without spending precious capital or man hours.
