The Idea

Consumers are often barred by manufacturers for buying goods outside the manufacturer's designated selling region. You only have to look on amazon.com to see that much of the software, electronic goods etc can't be sold to the UK. However, when some products are less expensive in dollars than the equivalent UK product is in pounds there is clearly a market for a reseller network. This idea is to set up a buyer and sellers network for shipping new goods internationally and to save people money. What would happen is that for US goods, a US purchaser would buy them on behalf of the foreign party, then charge a reshipment fee plus a percentage of the money saved. Site takes a portion of the proceeds.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Looking at a PCI card that was 88% more expensive in the UK, even allowing for VAT and inspired me to write this http://www.silicongl...rip-off-britain.html

ebay? If a authorized dealer was to do it, they could loose thier "authorization" to sell the product at all. A manufacturer does not have to allow someone to sell from them. As long as they are not price fixing (per say) they can put whatever limitations they want on the sale.

Another project which I would enjoy working on in a marketing role post-production

Yep, VAT and other market realities make goods more expensive in the UK.

Revolt, emigrate, tell the Queen to take her tea and.... oh, wait, been done, it's called the US.

Meanwhile, keep a stiff upper lip, suck it up, and take holiday where you can buy your goodies for cheap. Establishing a distribution channel to circumvent taxes is called bootlegging. The vendors don't levy legal taxes, but they base their prices on local market realities. Odds are, most of your mates are too lazy to swim to Hong Kong just to get a cheap DVD player - and the sellers know that.

If you really want something to cry about, look at what the pharmaceutical vendors do with regional pricing.

The only trouble comes if your package is selected for inspection by HM customs, you may find that having saved money of the purchase, you need to pay VAT on top of the shipping before you can get your parcel

I like the idea plenty.

Yoy could start with the general goods that are just not provided internationally due to companies and sellers not bothering to include international shipping etc. like is often seen on ebay and amazon.

The process then would be 100% legal and "win-win-win-win" that is, both the seller on ebay gets more sale, ebay gets more percentage, you as an freight-forwarder gets a share and the customer gets the product at a lower price.

It has merit in my view. The customer-base is huge outside USA for US-priced goods.

two words, export laws. The reason why you retailer can't sell it your region is due to export laws. A lot of time the EU has tighter restrictions on content and game studios will release a version first to the US and then to the EU once they have fixed the content violations.

The US faces the same situation with goods from Japan. Some just don't make it off the island. The same for the coolest phones in Korea, it takes a while to make it into US markets.

still, you never know where there might be a legal and profitable arbitrage opportunity. if this website existed (and perhaps it does, in the form of ebay), people will find the places where they can make a buck.
