The Idea

Web interface where music students can see sheet music/ tablature and hear/manipulate the song at the same time, allowing the student to listen to, and see how to play specific songs. Student can slow down music without loss of pitch as they learn the different, more difficult sections. Notes on music/ tablature give special instructions on how to play certain sections. Student can add notes to music for other students (i.e. sheet music wiki), ask questions in the forum and submit their own riffs. Additional features: communities working on similar songs, playing tips from professionals, guest tutorials by experts streamed to the web, popular song lists, noticeboards, guitar advertising, play lists based on difficulty, riff competitions. Different emphasis to workshoplive.com which emphasizes specific guitar lessons. This idea hinges on large popular song database and wiki-like community features (i.e., make corrections, addition to tablature) Revenue model = monthly fee, advertising

I thought of this idea when I was...

thinking about better ways to learn the guitar. Idea has been improved through suggestions by community members (see people below). mkipf - other instruments merman - itunes model and other instruments kshex - need to separate from workshoplive aidan - multiple instruments, need to address copyright, alternative revenue through advertising

I support as this would be good for people who want to learn but don't have teacher. It would be good if the site help in teaching in playing keyboard. I love guitar and keyboard.

I'm a 15-year veteran of the guitar and would love to work on this. I have some ideas for the audio engine.

I'm a guitarist too and have thought about doing something like that too.
Go for it!! I really hope it works out :)

Sounds pretty cool. I was just looking at a harmonica lesson site yesterday and am teaching myself piano. Why limit yourself to one instrument.

www.workshoplive.com
It is somewhat similar, but I think that your idea may be a little more advanced and have more options.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the link Kshex
It is kind of good and disappointing to see workshoplive up and running.

I see my idea being different in the following ways
1) it is not based on having teachers, it is based on a huge library of songs and tablature, so you can easily find the song you want to learn
2) providing tools for manipulating the song so that you can learn it quicker/easier
3) quick loading - just need to load music and tablature as opposed to full flash player presentation
4) less emphasis on getting music teachers and therefore (hopefully!) cheaper

actually - looking further into workshoplive - it appears they have the kinds of tools i am talking about - might be that they have done what I am thinking - bugger (lol)

Assuming you want to go into competition with the site you mentioned, how do you go about getting the tablature onto your site? I imagine that the music companies will want license revenue for anything to which they own the copyright.

I think the idea is not bad, and I agree that multiple instruments is probably the way to go. Real teachers could advertise on the site as a secondary revenue stream.

I think you got something great here too! I'm a guitarist to and that would be a great way to continue improving!

Couple this with a pdf sheet music print, the publishing house pays CH a small commission for the sale (i.e. think itunes but in pdf sheet music form instead). Make the cost for the music low enough that people with make up their own music folios and they get the instruction as part of the package! Don't limit it to just guitar like others have said, this could be used for any instrument.

Hey everyone - thanks for the positive feedback. With multiple instruments, itunes type model and additional revenue streams, I believe this would be an awesome piece of software. Thanks to everyone who has submitted suggestions. I will not forget that if the idea is successful.

Have you checked out Guitar Pro?

It's a program that helps you in many ways if you play guitar, has some of the features you mentioned.
Funny how I just read your idea about wikiing tabs etc. just after I posted a longer version on mine, after your comment, which had a similar idea with concept of wikiing in it.
In fact I think our ideas could merge.

Keep those ideas about music sites alive!
