I think web 2.0 and CH are the missing link for ordinary people to contribute meaningfully in the new ways of creating wealth in this so called new economy.Cycko, Feb 2007

Buy someone a website as a gift (e.g., birthday, wedding, for business). Gift includes 12 months domain registration, 12 months hosting and access to a suite of web-building tools/templates. When gift is given, ownership is swapped over to recipient who can modify the site however they want with the included tools/templates. Recipient's site is guaranteed links through the "websiteforagift network". Designed to give web-newbies a chance to have a functioning good-looking site.
I gave my partner a website for her birthday but the process could have been made much easier, and simple web-building tools would encourage her to build something on it.
Seems some one is already selling this :(

Hey Jams, thanks for the link. I don't think Mr Site is a huge problem. His focus is more on developing site for yourself. I envision creating it as a gift and having it electronically "packaged" and sent to the recipient. When they visit they can alter it at will. I also envision the concept being more like modern start-pages, rather than website templates (which Mr Site uses). Programmers can submit unique widgets/code to the websiteforagift community.
No probs.
The last thing I want is for someone to buy me a website. Getting a website would kind of like be getting a job - now that I have this website I have to maintain it, pay for hosting, etc.
"Honey, I bought you a dog. Now go walk it."
Name registrars and hosting services are a dime-a-dozen nowadays anyway.
Hi Dplass and tublius
Cheers for the feedback. Although negative, it is cool that you take the time to comment on ideas. It helps sort them out.
In answer to both of your criticisms:
There are hundreds of different gifts that are never used. If the recipient is not interested, well they do not use it and it expires after 12 months. No different than buying a DVD that is watched once and relegated to a box in the shed. At least this gift provides an opportunity for someone to play around with a website, (at no cost to them) for a year and decide if it is something they enjoy. If they enjoy it, then it will not be an issue to renew it. If someone buys me a camera, I dont get angry at having to buy batteries if i really enjoy taking photos. As for the dog analogy, colourful but not really the point.
Gifts are always a bit of a gamble. I am sure we have all given duds before!
how can it work..
