The Idea

Having been a non exec director myself, and my recent experience in the job market, both convince me that this idea will work. Many boards have non exec directors who perhaps only work for a company for 2-3 days a month. Why should this be limited to those at director level? Surely the breadth of experience a non exec brings is relevant at every level of a company? My other experience has been when job hunting as an IT manager. Organisations think they need a manager, then change their mind and can't justify one full time. So it's all or nothing as there seems to be no part time IT management positions below board level. So create the part time job market: A site where people post their skills and available time per week and interested companies bid for a certain time commitment per week or month in return for a salary. So if one company couldn't afford a full time IT manager, maybe I could work for a basket of companies and split my time between them. After all, directors do it

I thought of this idea when I was...

Frustration in the job market after being shortlisted for several companies, only for the job to "go away". Experience as a non exec director myself and also seeing colleagues who make a living doing nothing but being non exec directors.

I like the idea. This can work for any industry. Good job.

Great idea, but there is a caveat: A company wants its management staff to commit themselves to the organisation, and this is better achieved with full-time staff (and a full-time salary). A company would have to accept that part-time directors may not always identify with the company and perhaps work as part-time directors for a competing company at the same time? However, we could try to create this part-time market and see how companies would react...

Honestly, people in roles like IT management and other "support" personnel, most companies couldn't care less how "committed" they are to the company. They only hire an IT team at all because they basically have to in order for their LAN to work correctly.

I think this will work in situation where stock options will be used. It gives incentive for the part time exec to create value in the organization.

The idea is good, but the non-exclusivity of the indviduals could be an issue. Non-competitve arrangements (by industry sector for example) could make it work.

I would rename it to something like: The ultimate subject matter expert.

Yeah, what NSK said....

You've seen yourself that this would be welcomed by skilled people looking for (more) work; do you have any idea if companies would want to use a scheme like this? Try and do some research to find out how whether it would be accepted by the other side.
